broken washing machine

Hello everyone

This evening I think my washing machine died:(

It is an indesit and I opened the door at the end of the cycle and water flooded out. All lights on machine are flashing. There is a funny humming sound when I tried to spin to get rid of water. There is also an odd smell coming from the machine, like burnt rubber.

Any ideas of whats wrong or if its fixable before I buy another??

I think it will be a good while before I get another I am living on next to nought already. My laundrette is too expensive so I am handwashing bits but wringing them out on yur own is a mission :rotfl:

The filter may be blocked - as the water hadn't drained.
Most Indesit Washers have a pre-pump filter on the bottom r/h side behind the plinth.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

    Thanks for the replies.

I have emptied the filter and found a penny, that didn't fix it so I have unone the pump inside , found some more monry and a pen lid, that hasn't fixed it. the belt is on and secure. It isn't draining the water so must be a blockage but I cant seem to find it. I blew down the grey pipe, and sometimes its clear sometimes it feels blocked, possibly a 5 p stuck in the ipe acting as a flap???

I cannot afford a new machine, cant even afford a second hand one. For now I am hand wshing and when I get desperate I will take towels and bedding to the laundrette, its quite expensive for a service wash, so I am hand washing as much as I can,

It will take me a good 3 months to save for a machine, so if anyone has any more ideas of what I could do as a possible fix I would be vey greatful.

It might be the bushes. Post this in the DIY section and see if anyone can help there.

  • I had a problem with a hotpoint washing machine not draining properly and eventually found a couple of baby socks stuck in a drainage pipe right inside the machine (not the obvious grey outlet one). This might be your problem, but it sounds more like the drainage pump has broken - this might not be an expensive fix. If you have a washer repair place locally they would probably give you an estimate for free.
    Hope this helps.

Our machine broke down a few years back. The landlord was happy to replace it as it was quite old, but we said why not try to get it fixed first - paid about £40 for the call out, and nothing for the squirt of WD40 and few minutes un-sticking the component. The problem was different to yours, but it may be worth getting an engineer to have a look and quote you for repairs, if it isn't something simple like un-blocking or un-sticking something which they could do in the time available... The machine lasted well until something else went seriously wrong and it was time to replace it.

If all else fails, try Freecycle. People often just want someone to take stuff away, so you'd be doing them a favour.

The other MSE alternative is to get a reconditioned machine locally. There are masses of small businesses now which pay to pick up unwanted machines from the tip, recondition them (or scavange them for spare parts) and resell them. Excellent value for money.
    Better is good enough.

If the pump's working, you need to check if water is getting to it and the outlet is clear.
take pipe off to pump and place bowl under pipe end and then pour jug of water in drum of machine, as it's lowest point, it should pour out..
If that's clear then you need to check piping after pump, the bend where flexible drainpipe connects to is a likely place to look.
Make sure machine unplugged whilst doing this as water and electricity don't mix.

is it an old INDESIT machine? the one I had, I had problems with the door catch ( I was told it was a common problem with that model - sorry cant remember which one). I replaced that catch three times before the machine finally died. its a small part, but when it goes the machine is always full of water and it dies in the middle of the cycle for some reason. oh and its an easy DIY job if you can get the part. worth trying!
