Is it legal for ebay to take commission from seller's postage?

Really, so you would buy from him with his exaggerated postage before me with my free postage? Well now I will be cheaper than him, win to me.

I just search for cheapest item including postage.
I do tend to take feedback into account though.
Your greatness is measured by your kindness; your education and intellect by your modesty; your ignorance is betrayed by your suspicions and prejudices, and your real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance you have for others.

Proving my point I think - that the business sellers flooding the market with cheap items because their shop set-up allows it is disadvantaging small sellers like me who are still offering a good item at a fair price but cannot compete. I personally think all 99p buy it now items should be disallowed before eBay turns into a cheap and nasty online Pound Shop. I also think that these lazy sellers who pile on thousands of listings should be forced to add photos so that the buyer can see the item, and I gather from eBay that this is in the pipeline. Starting an item at 99p and allowing it to level at its true value is one thing, but actually selling it for 99p is just clogging the site up with rubbish.

What is the starting price level you require? £2, £10, £100?
Big sellers will always have an advantage over smaller sellers, that's life.

I nearly always avoid bids if a buy it now alternative is available (even if it costs more), I dont have time to wait for a bid to end especially when most savvy people wait until the last moment to bid anyway, why some people have 10 day bids is beyond me.

I had something in my watch list rolling over on 10 day bidding for 3 months unsold, would that be costing the seller money?

it really depends on the type of item Im selling
    if its unique/hard to price
then i use a long listing and bids
My most recent example was an old set of suspension forks
thse had been dry stored,so despite being old they were in near new condition
they went for £100 more than i had gauged them at

I don't have a problem with auctions starting at 99p like I said, but BIN items at 99p that are very obviously worth more simply serve to cheapen everything and turn the site into an online Pound Shop. That is not what it was supposed to be and if that's what people want then eBay will lose money at 10p FVF per listing!

I think what it was set up to be and what it is now are two entirely different things- ebay, like everything evolves.

If they are selling items for 99p they are certainly not worth more than that.

  • I do agree mostly with what Rotti says about the race to the bottom.
I've had numerous items not fit for purpose, where the most successful seller is the one who has shaved a few pence off. I have given examples in the past of some carp I've bought.

Anyhow, what keeps fueling it is this:
I just search for cheapest item including postage.

All the time people do this and don't stop to analyse, ask questions, compare, the race to the bottom continues.

Oh yes, and then the threads which end, "I would have been willing to pay a bit extra had I known"

    But you do know.

Every week since you have been born you have heard someone say , "You get what you pay for"... so you do know,

    but you will still:
I just search for cheapest item including postage.

As I said what level do you want? There has to be a low price if you want to arbitrarily stop the existing one.

I'm not sure Ebay was ever 'supposed to be' anything more than an easily accessible site to sell on.
