I like the idea of sending flowers and maby a card.

If someone don't have time and room to avoid a collision, they were driving to fast, even if the speed limit says otherwise.

you are so wrong with this post. a cat could run out in front of you while you were driving at 15MPH and you couldn't avoid it!

I completely disagree with this. I ran over a 6 year old girl once while travelling at less than 20mph. She ran straight out from between two parked cars right in front of me. No time to stop. Cats do similar.

I have to agree with this - when i was 6 i ran across the road opposite my school and i was hit by a car. Driver couldn't have been doing more than 10mph.

Lisa, you did all you could have done in that you stopped. My cat got hit by a car when she was about 2 and the person just drove off, didn't look at her collar for a number or anything. She was still alive, and she somehow (to the vets disbelief) managed to crawl back home. We got her there just in time and she turned 16 last July!

You did all you could in that situation, nobody could ask for anymore than that. You're only human and these things happen.

A car 2 cars in front of us hit a cat, stopped briefly then left.

We put the cat in a blanket and took it to a vet, sadly nothing could be done.

Well done to the OP for stopping, it shows much about your character.

I'm glad you stopped and I bet the cat's owner is as well. One of my cats was killed last week. My neighbour saw it and knocked to tell me - I promptly burst into tears. He said the car was driving fast (it was in a service road so should only have been going slow), hit my cat and just drove away. Neighbour checked and he was killed outright.

I do think the driver could have done the decent thing and at least stopped to check if the cat was dead or not

It's not a nice thing to happen and you've told the woman how sorry you are it happened. That's it. Don't keep apologising or she may start to think you could have avoided the cat and chose not to.

My mum would never have thought that if someone had kept apologising, lets put it this way, the girl who hit my mums cat was in a terrible state, crying, its one of these things you never forget

Nothing wrong with apologising in my view, shows you care. Particularly as an animal lover yourself, if I ever killed a cat by accident as a cat owner Id be absolutely devastated

And Id feel the same way about any animal, some people dont sorry to say
  • I agree, flowers are a thoughtful idea which don't put the receiver in an awkward position as money perhaps could have done.

Cats (and many wild animals) can be very unpredictable on the roads and this one was very lucky that you as a caring driver stopped and took the time to check it out, and it's owner near by to say goodbye to, that can't be all that common. You did make the best of a sad situation.

It wasnt your fault you didnt do it on purpose what a horrible experience my dad ran over his neighbours cat once it had gone to sleep in the wheel arch of his van was pretty horrific but again an accident you apologised you didnt drive away or ignore what had happened you went to the owner and said sorry and explained what happened its all you could do

Try to put your mind at rest unfortunately cats do sometimes do silly things

To be honest, I think your reaction would've been solace enough for her, considering the amount of drivers who regularly hit cats and speed off from the scene.

I completely agree with aileth here. If it had been my cat, of course I would have been absolutely devastated - but knowing that you stopped to check on the cat and try to find the owner and were terribly sorry would have been at least some comfort.

Our neighbourhood cats are always running across the nearby busy road and it would be so easy for one of them to be run over. It's what cats do, unfortunately. We did find one of them lying in the road, left by a driver who didn't bother stopping. That was much more upsetting, knowing that she'd lain there without anyone seeing if she was okay, because someone didn't bother to find out. If the driver had done what you did, it would have made a big difference, I think.

You did the right thing under the circumstances. You've apologised profusely to the owner and she knows how much you regret what happened. I'd just leave her now to her grief. It sounds as though she understands that it wasn't your fault.

It feels terrible to you because you are obviously a good and caring person.
