JSA Rant

Me and my OH went to claim JSA today, the end result being that unless he is willing to quit his university course we cannot claim a penny
Its due to:
1) Us being a couple in the same house
2) Me not being eligible for contribution based as i recently graduated
3) OH goes back to university (3rd year) in september, so he is not classed as a full-time student out of term-time.
Well we COULD claim if my OH starts looking for work and is willing to give up his course is an opportunity arises.
It just seems ridiculously unfair to student couples.

Job Seekers Allowance!
The clue's in the name."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
I'M seeking a job
My OH is a student.
As soon as he 'starts again' in september i will be able to claim... How is that fair? (thats the point im tying to make)0 -
students cannot claim JSA in the holidays...this stopped many years ago. Student finance is to cover the whole year with the exception on in the final year when it is lower.
When you sign on for income based JSA you will find that they will include some of his student finance/loans as household income
plenty students work in the holidays and many work all year0 -

You aren't a student couple - your boyfriend's a student, you're unemployed0 -

I thought you were still considered a student until the day before the new academic year starts. Ie the end of the summer holidays.
You should have been aware of this.
Although its a common mistake most graduates make, they spend their loan money early on in the term making no allowances for when they leave uni, then expect to claim JSA as soon as their exams are done if they haven't secured a job.
Its not the case as you have has student loan money to cover the exact period you are now trying to claim JSA for.
When your boyfriend starts again in september you will be classed as his dependant, therefore he will be expected to take care of you through his student loans, which he should be able to get an extra amount for.
If you cant manage on this you, or him, or both will have to get a job to supplement your income.
Im not 100% on this but your income if you do find a job may affect his student loans etc.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!:T0 -

I haven't, i still have savings, i was just unaware of the process. He never claimed a student loan for the first two years (then went on placement) and he is claiming the student loan next year however it is based on his dads income ( I think).0 -

Question:
How long has it been since FT students could claim JSA?
He is a FT student until his course is finished or he drops outWell we COULD claim if my OH starts looking for work and is willing to give up his course is an opportunity arises.

Yes he is a student. I am not, im wanting to claim JSA and was told we would have to do a 'joint claim' since i can only claim income based and we live as a couple.0
