I see no insults. ;) I am just trying to establish Esoog's position on this matter. I'd hardly want to misinterpret the analogy with tango megaphones now, would I? If I ever find myself up on libel charges, I'll want to know how to make my defense.

Ahem - back on topic if I may.

I recently activated my A&L debit card and was too "offered" the card protection. When I declined, politely of course, I was asked "oh.... why don't you want it???" to which my response was "I'm already covered elsewhere". Not strictly telling the truth but it worked to get them off the phone.

I was surprised, like the poster above, as to the hard sell though. It was a bit inappropriate but then I guess they have targets to meet  so I won't hold it against the advisor, rather the institution!

Only an idiot would pay £59.99 for identity fraud protection >

    IMHO :rotfl:

To get back on subject, I applied for and used the A+L £1000 overdraft, with no problem. Only thing to look out for is it is 1 year only, but the interest rate thereafter is quite reasonable. I do not like A+L, but in this respect their service is pretty good.

I also got the hard sell treatment on this as did others I know who have opened the account - so long as you are firm in saying no, however, what happened to the opening poster should not happen. I simply told them I was covered under my house insurance and that was the end of it - I think that's the easiest way to get rid of them.

I also agree that the title of this thread is entirely misleading though as there is nothing wrong with the 0% overdraft and this thread really has nothing to do with that.

    Regards

I have recently opened a account with alliance & Leicester to take advantage of the overdraft facility. Once opened i had a call from a delightful chap informing me of identity faud and that i caould be protceted for just £59.99 a year. I asked for him to send me datails to look through. Received them in the post a few days later. Had a look and decided against and placed them in the paper shredder . Activated the alliance & leicester card. Checked my balance today on the website and have had a direct debit of £59.99 taken!!!!! Have rang and spoken to some rightous rude employess of the company Identity protection and have been told that they will contact me in 7 days once they have listened to my converstaion with the gentlemen before they can consider a referal of a refund. Made them aware i did not agree to subscribe. then the girl told me it was because i didn't read the small print and my certificate was at the bottom of the letter. then told me that when i activated my card i subscribed to the subscriuption. So my conclusion is that alliance & leicester are in on it they must get some kind of payment from the company for sharing customer details and find it utterly disgusting that a well know company such as the alliance & leicester can allow this to happen to their customers new ones as that.

I would be more concerned about the phone call.I never give details to the caller.
Ask them to email or post without giving details. You may also want to profile your account to not get calls from the bank

When I went to activate my cards from A&L they told me that if I recieved the pack then it was saying I was interested but had ten days to say no. I politely told them no thank you I didn't want the pack sending out.
