Electric shower fits and starts to get going

We have a Redring Expressions 500S 8.5kw electric shower that was in when we moved in, and recently - when you press the power button on the shower - it does nothing for about 4 seconds, then the power goes on and off for a bit - quite spasmodically - gradually going from 'less on' to 'more on' until it is continuously on.

I can't see anything wrong inside.

One post here - http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=403348 - suggests that it's the 'power on/off delay pcb' that needs replacing, but I can see two pcbs and the showerdoc.com spares page (http://www.showerdoc.com/redring-expressions-500s-8-5kw-53673001-shower-spares) doesn't seem to show which one it is (actually no. 15 - the 2nd pcb is missing in their parts list).

Can anyone help?

Otherwise we might just get a new one as the Triton Seville 10.5kW has just come down to £86 on Amazon.

Be careful if you are uprating to a higher power shower. Are your electrics (wiring, circuit breaker/fuse, switches etc.) up to supplying a higher current?

  • Yeah, I've semi-looked into the ins and outs of upgrading and I know about the need for certain electrical requirements like thickness of wires and mcb amps etc. I wouldn't go ahead with a new one before properly looking into it, but thanks for the reply anyway.

Usually if a part number is not listed, it means that they no longer stock that part. Under the Q&A for that model they suggest the following to check if your shower is pulsing on start-up:
1 That the main valve coming into your house is fully open.

2 Then check that the valve on the line to the shower is fully open.

If these valves are not fully open then there may not be enough water
getting to your shower which could be causing the pulsing.

It may also be a faulty push button switch.

They also say that if the above doesn't work, to send them a video (for further advice) to: gt@showerdoc.co.uk

Why haven't you asked Redring Technical Support? Its what they are there for. Just because showerdoc or showerspares aren't showing anything or showing unavailable it doesn't mean it isn't. One company recently changed all their numbering so showerdoc went into unavailable mode for everything because the numbers didn't match any more. Surprise, surprise actually talking to the manufacturer yielded dividends.

    Cheers

  • Thanks Keystone, I contacted the Redring technical support team today and they responded already saying what the problem was and we should be able to take it from there. :j
