Supermarket Fuel - Bad Buy?

Interesting to see last MSE really valued the Tesco 5p/litre discounts. I have been alternating between Tesco & Shell for full tanks of diesel over the last 12 months and am convinced I get up to 8% better consumption on my Golf with Shell (52mpg vs. 48mpg). That's the equivalent of some 11p/litre!! A couple of friends also believe they have similar experience, anyone else.....????

If you really do then that's impressive but I'm skeptical. Care to share your data? That is a MUCH bigger difference than Shell were banned from claiming in their adverts by the ASA...

    Brilliant answer:rotfl:

There really is no difference between supermarket and independent garage fuel - except to your bank account;)

I've been going to Lime recently as they are 2-3p a litre cheaper than the supermarkets by me, but gonna try Tesco as I stocked up on pet food and have loads of vouchers. I bet I wont see a difference.

We have a small petrol station (forget brand) only a few metres from entrance to our road, which is good to know in an emergency, but we do our fuel up at Morrisons same time as weekly shop which is the cheapest in our area.

Generally the smaller petrol stations by me are more expensive, I think this one is cheap as it's just opened and they haven't set up the card facilities yet so it's cash only. The saving is from the card transaction fees not having to be paid.

Fuel is given octane ratings and is subject to strict testing etc, you don't get good or bad fuel unless it's been left for months (unlikely). What does differ is the oil companies additives that they use and these can differ and have a bearing on consumption. For example the additive Shell use in V-Power is different to BP's ultimate additive.

There are only a handful of refineries in the UK where the fuel comes from, and the supermarket fuel comes from the same place as Shell, BP etc get it from. What is important to remember is that fuel expands and contracts based on temperature, so that has a bearing on how much mileage you do as well and how much you can fit in your tank.

There is a placebo effect in peoples minds that supermarket fuel is not as good as branded fuel, where in fact it all comes from the same place!
