Postal Orders
NICKYS32
I sent off a postal order on Tuesday by 1st class mail and seller says they have not received it yet. I called the post office and they said their is no quick way of saying if it has been cashed and will send me a P58 form. I thought that checking would be easy as I do not want to pay twice even though the item was a bargain.
What do I do????

If you sent it crossed then there should be a way to tell i'd have thought0

should always use recorded delivery when sending such items
also, dont know about others, but my mail is terribly slow this week, along with the fact that my postie is turning up at close to 12 o clock rather than the usual 8.45, much of my mail is arriving 2-3 days later than expected.
this could also be the case for your seller?0 -

lol
well at least you would actually know if the recipient is telling the truth or not!
anyway, not all things sent recorded delivery have a monetary value! they could just be important documents which are of no use to anybody else.0 -
I think the P58 is the missing mail form ...... which is the first step in claiming for your lost PO.
Personally I would send photocopies of the original receipt. Just incase that letter goes missing!!:D0 -

Trouble is, it goes in the normal mail along with anything else, and the only form of tracking is when it's signed. If it isn't signed... well, who knows!
As it's in the normal mail and people tend not to bother sending recorded unless there's something special inside... well... all it takes is a postie with a sly eye. He won't care if it's a document because there was always the chance it was something more valuable. The RM won't know what stage it went missing at because it's not tracked!
Special delivery (while possibly excessive for sending a postal order) is despatched separately and looked after a lot more carefully than recorded. My TV is broken!

Special Delivery is no better than signed for delivery.
The Royal Mail failed to deliver four SD items of mine this year alone.
All refunded by the insurance cover, but that is not the point.
You do not need to send postal orders by signed for delivery, they are traceable through the bank where they were cashed.0 -
reason i suggested buyer should send via recorded was because delivery confirmation for recorded items is usually given on the same day, so its easy to know whether the seller is right in saying they haven't received the PO.
unfortunately a thread about a PO has turned into a thread about RM services.0 -
Arguably a postal order is less likely to arrive via recorded than by standard mail, so I think I raised a valiud point

The majority of signed for mail that I deal with are papers/documents and this one would fall into that category. I dont think that sending papers by signed for is more liable to loss ....where as the sender KNOWS it was delivered (or not)
Just my experience of course and I probably deal with between 1 and 4 dozen a a day!!
