Am I allowed to sell my Plusnet router?

Hi...

Just in the process of leaving plusnet for BT. I am going to have to pay £40 for the pleasure of cancelling to cover the router charge.

After this I'm assuming I own the router and can sell it on? Will it be of any use to anyone looking to buy? or am I better chucking it??
Seen a few BT homehubs on ebay but no plusnet

Cheers in advance!

Depends what type of router it is.

If it's a "bargain" basement unable to purchase anywhere else (hence the value of £40) you might get a few quid for it.
  • Yeah see how it goes on Ebay I guess...cheers

Standard Thompson Plus Net router second hand is not worth anything really .It can only be used on Plus Net unless hacked even then its not worth much .

When I upgraded to Fibre optic, I gave my old router to a friend, who was also on Plusnet, because at that time he didn't have any WiFi connection.
We were both surprised to find it worked.... but I didn't realise until a few weeks later that all his internet usage had been going onto MY account.

it was easy enough to change via software (its not hard coded into the router). But you do need to be aware that it can happen!

    ^ Good to know.
I have a Sky router and an O2 router in the loft.
Will probably just chuck them though as they're not worth keeping.

    Hi all,

@JGrant - yes, it will be yours to do with as you wish.

@JJ Egan - I'm afraid that's not true. It does have branded firmware, but will work fine on any ADSL/2+ service - you don't need to reflash it if you don't want to.

@CannyShopper - Hmm, sorry about that. If you factory reset it before you gave it to your friend, chances are the TR69 auto setup was still linked to your account (if you call us or let us know we can change this for you) so it connected itself on your details rather than his. If you didn't factory reset it, chances are it had your details in already which is why this happened.

If you've not let us know, and he factory resets it, the same thing may well happen again - if you post up a ticket ID from your account and let us know which router it is (serial number would probably be best) we'll unlink it from your account for you. That'll mean it won't auto setup unless we link it to your friend's account though, but he could call up and get that done or just raise a ticket.

    Hope that helps, cheers,

It would make a lot more sense for the environment if Plusnet would charge a lower departure/router fee and take the old router back, to reset and use as a replacement for another Plusnet customer.
