I did have a T2, and the steering was woolley with little feedback about what direction they were pointing in they are certainly no Lotus.
Mine improved slightly with new steering rods and new bushes. Might be worth getting it checked over.0 -
check for play in the steering box?
I strongly recommend you purchase the book below.....?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Keep-Volkswagen-Alive-Step---step/dp/1566913101/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375891578&sr=8-1&keywords=idiots+guide+to+VW
How to keep your VW alive...by John Muir.
Excellent, clear drawings instead of out-of-focus photos like Haynes...covers all aircooled Veedubs....lots of urban-myth-splashing hints & tips tooNo, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

They do feel like you're steering a boat, especially if you are used to driving something more modern in your everyday use.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out just to be safe - They do have a very reliable steering system though, even if it is a bit 'flakey' in the response department.0 -

I don't understand how a T2 could be a "2010 version" - what do you mean?
Also, Halfords is probably the last place on earth anyone should go to have a steering check........if you have the funds for a T2, which is a very specialised, enthusiast type vehicle, surely you would go to a specialist on these vans? Or at least a decent garage? I wouldn't let the likes of Halfords anywhere remotely near a T2 or any other vehicle, for that matter!
We have a T4 and love it to bits, it drives superbly and I am currently using it for daily commuting - although of course its an entirely different beast to the old rear-engined T2 which as you have been told, can be "quirky" to drive, slow and prone to breaking down unless much time and money is lavished on it.......0 -
The position of the wheels on the T2 can be disconcerting for someone who isn't used to effectively sitting forward of the front axle. On nearly every new van on sale today you sit behind the front wheels. The man without a signature.0

Are the T2 not still made in Brazil and imported to the UK? seen a 13 plate the other day.0 -

They are imported from Brazil I think, perhaps Mexico or South Africa.
The T2 should have been strangled back in the 50's/60's, certainly utter junk in todays world. And that my son, is how to waft a towel!0 -

a very capable vehicle..certainly better under any old type of road surface than today's VW offerings.....which would belly out at the slightest hint of a rough,off-road type surface.
However, on the smoothest of smooth tarmac they obviously are outclassed by today's offerings....but...
They were fine, did the job for years....kept going..and will continue to do so, long after all our ECUs have fizzled out.
I'd rather take a VW bus across the Sahara, straight out of the box, so to speak, than any modern small commercial [ aside from a Toyota pickup, that is]No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
