scanner not there.

have recently purchased a hp computer and am well pleased with it. I have managed to load my cannon printer and get it to work.
But i have a hp scanjet 3400c scanner and i have loaded it , all things are installed on my computer, but when i try to start the scanner the reply that i get is 'can not find device'.
I have done add/remove and tried again to load it.But the same has happened. i have been on thw hp web page to get a new driver but this doesn't seem to have worked. Can it do with the fact that i have now got windows xp and i used to have 98.
Please can anybody help as i need to scan something for monday to work.

For HP it's not just the drivers, it's the whole software package that needs updating. You should probably uninstall everything that has anything to do with the scanner, disconnect it, download the new package here , install it, and only after that reconnect the scanner. This procedure would ensure that both scanner drivers and TWAIN interface are updated.

Is the printer on the USB port also? If so, have you tried swapping them round..or just plugging in the scanner without the printer?

Do you get any power light when you plug in the scanner?
Do you get anything popping up in your taskbar when you plug the scanner in?

If you are running a laptop- have you tried a powered hub?

If you upgraded from Windows 98, you should reformat and install XP as a base install - it doesnt work well otherwise.

Dvb thanks for that i tried that page but that did not work.
And rogue_element thanks for that yes it is usb, haven't tried swapping the usb ports. Nothere was no power light and nothing poped up in my task bar. But it's all loaded in the all programs part and when i click on it to start it everything loads up for me to start a scan but when i click on that just says can't find device.
No its not a laptop.
I didn't upgrade from windows 98 that was on my old computer this is a new one with xp already installed on it.

ps i'm not very technie so please be patient.

Well hubby did what it said on that hp page and we just got the same message as before.

Did what? How could you possibly reinstall everything in under 5 minutes?

When you say there is no power light- do you mean there isnt one or it didnt light?

Can you look in the device manager and see if it is listed?

You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager.

DVB we actualy did that before i came on this message board for help. and rogue_element i get as far as ahrdware tab but can't find device manager. Sorry to be a pain but i really know nothing about computers.

Device Manager is a button on the hardware tab. Which buttons have you got?
