Diesel Quality - where would you buy for a long term runner?

I have the option of getting a 2012 Golf 1.6 TDI to drive and i would plan to run it for a min of five years at 25,000 miles a year

Bearing in mind the question mark over diesel quality and the possible impact on injectors and pumps, would you be recommending running on say, ASDA fuel where theres maybe a 5p per litre cost saving OR would you be running it on a (perceived?) quality diesel from one of the main players, and if so which one?

Thanks in advance

Been answered loads of times. It makes little difference. I found my mpg was a bit different at certain garages but not massively difference to bother with.

Not so much concerned about the MPG variation, but i wouldnt want to get to 80K miles, need injectors then be told 'oh thats because you used supermarket fuel'.

You could add a little two stroke oil into the diesel. Lots of people do. Ratio to use is about 1:200.

I wouldn't be running a diesel at all, too much unreliable/expensive cr4p attached to them these days (eg DMF and DPF).
Fine if you want to buy new and keep for just 2-3 years, but in the long term petrol is cheaper to run.......

I tend to use Shell diesel whenever possible (not the expensive stuff) as it's generally the same price as the supermarkets and psychological or not, my car seems to run better on the Shell.
  • I have the 2.0 TDI C/R, it definitely prefers BP or Shell over Esso and would spurn any visit to a supermarket forecourt.

If that happens then the injectors aren't fit for purpose. It makes little difference whether you stick to branded fuel or not.

Wherever's cheapest. All fuel in this country has to conform to pretty high standards compared to many countries, and the same manufacturers sell the same engines to run (reliably) on the local muck in those countries.

The problem there is, if you do find yourself needing injectors because (for example) they've pushed the nozzle orifices to the limit of reliability at the design stage, you'll be told that regardless of whether or not the fuel which completely meets the standard they've specified is to blame or not.
  • Is this a money saving thing ? Why not buy a car 1/4 the price with 100K on the clock, and rag it til it hits 225K ?
