Sticky pad has ruined dashboard
Comments
-
If this has happened recently I would say it's more likely that the dashboard protective layer melted slightly in the heat and got stuck to the glue rather than the glue being so strong it peeled the dashboard. Or it could equally be a fault with the dashboard itself, has anything else ever been stuck to it to know if it would peel with any sticky surface?0

Oh look, the convention chairperson has arrived.0 -
Stick a NO smoking sign over the area or another sticky pad to hide it. LIFE is too short.0

How was the pad removed? Did he simply pull it off or was some care and possibly some alcohol solution used to remove it? I think you've (your son's) got pretty much next to no chance getting anywhere with this.0

The product has functioned correctly (it's stopped things sliding around)
Has it ?? If it was removed for cleaning, it makes perfectly good sense to put it back in the same location - what is stupid about that ??0 -

OP may not want to leave it in the car forever. It also affects the resale value of the car.0 -
Hi all....thanks for the info so far, just to respond to some of the posts, the sticky pad is a silicone flexible pad which you can place anywhere to stop things sliding, it is not adhesive and you can move it around as much as you like, the damage it has caused is quite substantial, the area which had the pad on is now looking like your hand if it has been in water for hours. The once pristine dashboard now looks a mess and I have a son who is pretty fed up that his new..well new to him... car is ruined0

Perhaps if he leaves it a while it will return to normal?0

Same thing happened to me a few years ago with one l bought in Asda, they strangely do not seem to have them anymore.Bought one for my new car (second hand car, but new to me) and put the mat on the dashboard and it wrinkled the vinyl.
Took it back to Asda, who had never heard of this happening and promised to look into it. They also offered to see what they could do to sort out my dashboard, but it was taking so long and what with working and school run, l stupidly never chased it up!!
Well, l obviously removed the 'offending' mat, the vinyl did NOT return to it's original condition!
The upside was because l had placed to mat squarely, it ended up looking like it was part of the dash, i.e. a built in square, if that makes sense.
Must admit l was very annoyed at the time!0 -

Thanks for the clarifications.
As it was sold for use on dashboards it should have been ok unless it specifically listed your sons car as unsuitable.
As it wasn't adhesive backed it would be reasonable to expect it not to leave a residue or damage the underlying surface.
So the product hasn't functioned correctly or as described and consequential loss has been incurred.
The fact the pad was 99p will affect how well it would be reasonably expected to work but not the expectation that it shouldn't damage the car.
Get a quote for a repair/replacement and take it up with the retailer (although how successful you are will depend a lot on the retailer).0
