I've been mystery shopping for about 8 months now and I'm becoming slightly more selective about what I do and do not take on.

My job has been pretty full on lately, with a degree of unpaid overtime, and it feels as though mystery shopping has taken a back seat. I've just counted it all up though and the last fortnight I've hit target and it has been okay, despite feeling I haven't done enough.

It takes a while to work out which jobs are worth doing or not. If I see RA flashing on my mobile I don't bother to pick up as they don't pay enough for the hassle and their briefs seem to scream MS. I don't commute so don't get the benefit of the stations which some do.

The good thing with MS work is you can reduce your work load down if the day job becomes too heavy.

Does anyone know if you can return clothes bought when mystery shopping?
I've signed up to do a shop in a clothes shop that I don't usually shop in. When I went to check the shop out I realised the clothes are really not my style. I'm happy to complete the shop, but do you know whether I can return the item after I've uploaded the receipt and completed the report or will I get in trouble for doing that? Is it better to cancel the shop altogether?

If there is nothing in the brief I would double check with the mystery shopping company before cancelling the assignment. If a return is not allowed it will usually state that in the brief though.

It sometimes tells you in the brief. I noticed MF have recently stated that returns are not permitted for a particular high-street clothing and homeware retailer client of theirs. I have respected this on my last couple of visits for them but previously always returned items as it effectively increased the fee.

I used to do that until MF put this condition in. I only do the shop now if I want to purchase an item.

It is a shame and a bit tight of MF or the client as I cannot see how it affects things particularly if you simply return to another store. It could even become part of the report if they used their imaginations a little. But that would probably be asking too much.

I did check the brief. It doesn't say whether you can return items or not in the brief. I have seen it in other briefs so wondered if it means it is allowed because it doesn't say that you can't return things.

When you did return things, what did you do about the job id number that you had written on the receipt? Did you cut it off or don't they care when they see it when you return items?

I wrote it in pencil. Never seemed to be a problem even though it must have been obvious as I write my others in pen. In general if it does not state that I cannot return then I do but not always as quite often the purchases I make are things that I want depending upon the store.
