Standard answer is you ask the provider how much to cancel the contract .That will be amount due to Jan 2015 possibly less a discount .Doubt if they would make any further discount if you want a no contract sim . But ask is best .

Sell the phone then pay the early termination fee would be the cheapest option

There are only two valid ways to void early without penalty: death or bankruptcy.
    Your choice.

didn't sign anything but did agree to contract and as stated in the original post i am happy to pay the contract but was just wondering if there was an alternative to way out of the contract earlier without a massive termination fee.

geeez! did we forgot our morning coffee?

As would we all. However you agreed a 24 month minimum term contract, and that is what your provider will hold you to. You can cancel it early if you wish, but you will be charged an ETC equivalent to the value left on the minimum term. So it won't save you any money. All you can do is maybe sell the contract on.
This question is asked several times each week, the answer does not change.

    That's the same thing.

I struggle to understand why you'd think you'd be able to cancel the contract without paying it off in it's entirety.

You know how a contract works right?
