The HSBC phone app is quite poor however as a tracker for seeing your balance it's ok.

The new app is meant to be quite special and it's on it's way soon or that's what I was told the other day.

I wouldn't bank on their app being that great to be honest. I'm not sure if they share the same development team as first direct, but both banks have had a poor showcase of apps so far.

HSBC on Twitter keep informing customers an app is coming in the near future, so hopefully that'll be by the end of September, and hopefully it's a great app.

I would be extremely surprised if the new HSBC app turns out to be anywhere near as good as the Barclays one. The 'Fast Balance' app doesn't inspire much confidence. What a pile of sh*t that is. Why has it taken them so long to launch a fully functioning app, with their deep pockets you would expect an app to beat all others.

Despite the lack of a decent app HSBC are generally a good bank in my opinion. Since jumping ship to Barclays I have not looked back.

In my opinion, one of the best Internet Banking websites if it wasn't for the secure key. The ability to see payments going in/out the next day is very handy, as is being able to message a staff member, update when you're travelling etc.

The only downside of HSBC is their app is terrible. I know they're releasing a new version soon.

Barclays seem to be quite good. Great app, internet banking and they offer small but useful things like same day debit cards (in branch).

The Barclays app is fantastic as is their Internet banking. Historically Barclays always seem to come out with things first. The only downside is that Barclays don't allow you to see pending transactions on line but that is not too big a deal against the background of a great app.

What do you guys think of HSBC?

A very good solid bank and a good choice if you don't mind having an app more befitting five or six years ago.

    My sentiments exactly.

Don't understand why Santander charge a monthly fee of £2 on their 123 account. They charge even if you have £20,000 in the account and other savings accounts. Okay, they pay you interest on your current account if you have at least £1,000 in it, but still don't understand why they charge the £2.

But I would love First Direct to give me cashback on my household bills, come on First Direct look after your loyal customers.

I suspect that this will be the HSBC app that they launch in the UK - though they customise it slightly depending on the services they offer in each country.

It seems they are gradually rolling it out globally - looks as if its already out in 11 countries and the dummy screen shots in Google Play mention the UK. (as well as including a built in Digital Secure Key - see the first direct thread) so a physical secure key doesn't seem compulsory

PS: I will be in Hong Kong next week, so may try installing it to see what its like, though I don't have an account there!
  • I have been with HSBC since the Midland Bank days.
Have an advanced green account now as well as savings and an ISA. Suits me perfectly.
Their internet banking is the best I have seen (have other accounts with Santander, NatWest and Barclays) I have seen the new mobile app in Hong Kong and it looks the real deal...about time!
The advance account is £12.95 per month which includes world wide travel insurance for you and your family, full breakdown recovery and the same bank treatment all over the world as you get in the UK. Something which annoys me about other banks.

Well, I would imagine it would be difficult for you to pop into your local Bank of Scotland branch in China....
