Alternative is buying a spare phone for a tenner. It's proven that people can survive without a smartphone for a week or so.

    A very valid point...

Thats where you are wrong. My friend had a faulty Samsung and was given a model below the current one whilst his was being repaired. With the iPhone 5, the sim card is three times as small as a standard phone so its not as simple as to just use a spare phone

If this phone was any brand other than iPhone, then I could take it into any Orange/EE store to be repaired - they would then send it away to whoever the manufacturer is. Because this is an Apple phone, Orange are refusing to play any part, even tho they sold me the phone and I have to get the phone repaired at my cost (travel expenses) which I dont think is fair just because I own an Apple phone and not a Samsung etc

But using an iPhone 5 sim card in a phone that cost a tenner is virtually impossible

If you use apples online system they will collect your phone from your house, I did this when my ipod broke as at the time our nearest apple store was over three hours away. Even if you go direct to an apple store unless the phone cannot be repaired/the repair would be very expensive it is unlikely to genius bar will be able to fix it there and then unless it is a software problem, so you are still likely to be without a phone.

If the phone is currently not charging properly surely you are managing now without it anyway?

Why don't you buy a cheap pay as you go phone for a tenner and set up your current number to redirect to your new phone when calls aren't answered.

When I spoke to the Apple customer service centre they said I could not use the online collection service and I had to take it into my nearest store. Apple DO offer a replacement phone as my sister had one 12 months ago whilst hers was being repaired.

The phone will charge just with difficulty, hence still being able to use it.

As for buying a cheap PAYG phone... well thats just more expense past on to me. Cost of the phone and then cost of top up, as the iPhone 5 sim card will not fit in a standard phone

You are mistaken. Adapters are easily available and cost peanuts.

Nowadays everyone has to have a spare phone.

All depends what the store has in stock, if they have loan stock you can have it, if it's all out then you'll not get anything. And loan stock could be anything, you may get a basic Nokia or a newish smartphone.

It's not missing the point it's more understanding how the repairs work.

For any other brand they would send it to their in house or contracted repair group, they are unlikely to send it to the maker. Even most UK makers don't do repairs in house they contract out to repair groups because it's not always economically viable to maintain an in house team of repair engineers.

Apple insist they are the only one who can do the repairs hence it has to go to Apple one way or another.

Kingsd316 offered a link did you try following it to see if you can enter a request?

Charging port damage is almost always user inflicted, so it may be they need to check it's actually a warranty repair, but they can do that by post too.

Apple DO offer a replacement phone as my sister had one 12 months ago whilst hers was being repaired.

Generally speaking if you book an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar they will have a refurb ready and available there and then, so there no need for a loan phone. Apple almost always offer a swap service, you walk in with your faulty device and they swap it, you then own the new device, and Apple repair the only on and it goes to someone else. I've never heard of where they do a repair on the device and the customer gets the same phone back.

If Orange insist on you going to Apple, you may be best informing them in writing (ie not email, phone or verbally) that you will do this but sue them for reasonable travel expenses back to give them the chance to take the phone back and send it on. They as the retailer are liable under the sale of goods act, even if they are just an agent who sends the phone to Apple.
