Itinerary port times for Thomson cruises

When I look at the itinerary for my (first) cruise next week it has times down for each port e.g. Kusadasi - arrival 8:00 depart 17:00
In peoples experience are those times an indication of when you can get off the boat or just the time that the ship gets there, not including time for docking, security, checks etc. ?
Just I'm wanting to book an excursion through a different company (much cheaper but very highly rated on tripadvisor) that leaves from the dock at 8:30 and I don't want to risk missing it - not that it'll cost me anything as you pay at the end of the tour...but still would be sad

The arrival times are approximate.
After docking, they have to get the gangways down and go through the arrival formalities with the port officials. Typically this would take around 30 minutes, so you could make it in time for your tour. But also bear in mind, it's possible that a lot of passengers will be wanting to get off at the same time, so there could be queues to leave the ship.
Sometimes the ship may be early, equally it could be late, so there's no guarantee that you'll be able to join your tour.
Enjoy your cruise. I expect that you are going to Ephesus. It's trip worth doing, so I hope you get to do the tourEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Hi IanRI,
If the tour operator is meeting you at the ship,it will not be a problem. They are very used to picking people from the ship and will wait until your tour party is complete.
They are usually waiting as you come out of the terminal, holding a sign with your (group) name on it.
Ephesus is really amazing.
We got our tour driver to drop us in the town (Kusadasi) so we could do a little shopping before going back on board.
Have a great time.0
