Low emissions parking, how to benefit?

My local council offers a low emissions parking permit, but the proof of the low emissions has to be a g/km figure from the V5C, which because my car was 1st registered in 1995, I cant show

Is there anywhere I can prove my vehicle has sufficiently low emissions?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

If all they accept is the V5, then no......

i always wondered whether it's possible to get cars retested for co2 emissions... put alcohol fuel in there and get a 0g reading hehe.

How likely is it that an 18 yr old car will have "low emissions"?
  • And the irony is that the industrial emissions created in replacing an old car and building a new one, is probably alot more than that created by the old car if it's not doing a high mileage.

It's not a cheap, quick test that manufacturers have to submit cars to.

That's just one of the reasons why I stick to my guns on carbon emission based climate change being a complete scam.

We're encouraged to keep buying new stuff to make us "green", without consideration for the harmful waste produced in the manufacturer and disposal processes.

At no point during their planet saving propaganda, have they said those four words "make do and mend".

If we wanted to prevent carbon induced climate change, then really we'd all be driving 20 year old cars and making them last. Not buying a new one every 2 years and taxing the old ones off the roads.

In Cuba they've almost all been driving around in cars from the 1960's (due to law), keeping them in good condition and repairing them as needed. The law preventing them using new cars has been lifted, but I have a feeling most people will keep those old American cars going OR wish they had when their new car breaks down in the first 3 years of life.
Over here if you drive a car older than 3 years old, it's a "shed" and your labelled as being of a lower social class.

It's not just cars though, it's everything.

^^^^^^ Well said, and exactly the reason that I maintain that my 58 year old car, manufactured 12 miles away, is one of the 'greenest' on the planet.

    I demand free parking.

I understand the older is greener argurement. But whether you like it or not people will buy new cars because old cars die off and new cars need to be produced to fill the gap in the market.

The marketing is designed for people who are hell bent on buying a new car.

Quite likely if you're asking about real-life emissions rather than "tested" levels.

CO2 emissions are directly (and exactly) related to fuel consumption - every litre of fuel you burn creates a set amount of CO2 depending on what fuel it is (diesel creates a little more per litre than petrol).

So if, like someone on another current thread, you find that your "low emission" new car with 67mpg claimed fuel consumption is really doing 37mpg in real life, the ed claim111g/km of CO2 emissions is really 202 g/km in RL use.

My '96 Pug 405 estate gives a fairly (in fact, very) consistent 48mpg rgardless of load or where I'm driving it (except in town but I rarely drive in town) so it's creating 156 g/km of CO2 - which is considerably lower emissions than the new car above.

Yet he'll pay £30 per year road tax for driving a "green" car, while I'll pay £225 for driviing an old 2 litre that's actually producing around 25% less CO2 than his is in real life.

    Go figure!

eta: Note that, by keeping an older car in use, I'm also paying £50 per year more than someoone with a new car that has (claimed) fuel consumption the same as I'm getting!
