    Another urban myth!

See here and here for a couple of examples found in seconds.

and the second one claims its the "only" one! Anyway the question referred to "cheap" not "all" so was Battleaxe that incorrect?

OP - Incidentally an important rationale for not using hot fill is that the first "n" litres of water will be cold (that has been previously heated to hot) from the water that has sat in the pipework since the machine was last used. Therefore you could well be heating that water twice. "n" is dependent on length of pipework between hot water store/boiler and machine.

    Cheers

The statesman is a the right price, but there are no good reviews anywhere, and it comes under the "Never heard of it" banner, the other is £1000- for a washing machine :rotfl:

As to the pipework reason for cheapness, I always run the kitchen tap (right next to the washer and use the warm water for a bowl of washing up) to make sure that it is fed with hot water.

I was doing the same for the dishwasher until I had a flexible pipe leak and took it out to find that it was cold fill only

Looks like I'm off to get an A++ rating one for £250.

As the title, the trusty Hoover has exploded (literally, sparks out of the programmer) so it is time for a new one, such poor quality, can't be a day over 15 that machine.

Trawling Argos,Currys Apollo2000 Looking for about £200-£250 with a name I've heard of like Indesit and they all feature cold fill. (does that mean cold fill only? I suspect it does)

Now my Hoover was hot fill, so saved a bit of money as the hot water is heated by gas rather than expensive electricity.

Before actually going round lifting machines out to count the pipes am I looking in vain?

How can they be more efficient if they are heating up cold water?

Ditto on the cold fill only. It is an energy saving feature that has been around for donkeys years. Would avoid Indesit personally though. I used to work for an electronic retailer which has now gone bust and we had a nickname for Indesit if you add one extra letter lol!

Cheers all, went for another hotpoint in the end (the old Hoover actually says "Hotpoint" on the front :o), just walked into Apollo2000 and they have a nice one for a little bit more than I want to spend.

Good salesman, not pushy, pointed out how useful the timer is, told me beko & indersit only last 2 years, pointed out a design flaw in the Zanussi (the new ones have a big plastic flap in the drum, that will definitely break and let socks get in the works and wreck it), explained the Hotpoint 5 year guarantee is probably worthless as it costs £140 to get a Hotpoint engineer out to take advantage of free parts.

Didn't press me to an extended guarantee.
The lads round the back loaded it in the back of the car

    Job done

I did a quick google in the shop, and the price seemed right.

In the interests of balance I'll say that our Indesit washer is used almost daily, has been for the last, oh must be at least 10, years and never shown the slightest inkling to give any trouble whatsoever.

At least he got the extended warranty bit right though.

Indesit parts are shipped from Italy though.....MIL's machine took six weeks to be repaired because of that, not something I would risk.

Washing machines now are cold fill only to achieve a higher energy efficiency rating.

The washing machine heats the water to the required temperature rather than taking hot water and mixing with cold to cool it down.

I was told that the efficiency rating assumed that the water in a 2 pipe fill washing machine, had come from peak electric emersion heater.

But I think it's just a way of making them cheaper. Less Parts see.

Yours was made in The Olden Days when everything was made properly, before they invented lead free solder. Just like my WMA54.

Our old Toshiba TV lasted about 30 years 10 in 8 hours a day use, the rest as a bedroom TV, I can't get 5 years out of one now, I get a new one FOC under the extended guarantee :D

Just rang the hotpoint help line and I'm through to indesit!

Apparently hotpoint were bought by indesit in 2007, so they likely are the same machines with different badges on.

Indesit machines and Hotpoint machines are separate brands owned by the global Indesit company. They have many factories. It's not necessarily the case of badge engineering the same beastie. Still trust your salesman from earlier today implicitly?
