This is correct, the low temperatures break down the cell structure.
(I used to work in the produce department at the head office of a prestigious retailer, the kind of people who would only buy cherries from a certain side of the tree, for instance! Not in the UK). Our technologists said don't keep them in the fridge (and this was in a very hot country).0 -
I agree with the Vittoria from Sainsburys being about the best around at the moment. Or even Pomodorino. A couple of weeks back I bought the TTD Isle of Wight vine tomatoes and they were virtually tasteless I'm afraid."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. If anyone doesn't believe this:
Take two toms from the same lot, put one in the 'fridge and leave one on the side in the kitchen. Next day - just eat them.........the difference is amazing.0 -
Oven baking also sweetens them...even the usual cheap salad tomatoes. I cook at the highest temperature for sunday breakfast to get the kids to eat them.0

When in the supermarket/market I give the tomatoes a good sniff - the tasteless ones have a smell a bit like vomit.
I find the "on the vine" seem better than the others normally. but sometimes the value ones can be good.0 -
^ I find some smell a bit bleach like to me... and the taste seems to carry through.0

Same with strawberries but a couple of hours at room temp is enough to improve them.yangptangkipperbang wrote: »If anyone doesn't believe this:

Ha ha think you might be having your leg pulled with that myth.
To actually harvest a cherry like that would cost a fortune in labour and selection and not financially viable. As a supplier to waitrose and M & S of produce, sometimes what they want and what they get are a bit different."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

Hi, besides grow your own, the variety I've found to have the best taste are Marmonde tomatoes, they have a tangy fruity taste, I buy them from Waitrose, not cheap but a little piece goes a long way..0
