Tasty Tomatoes

I don't usually like tomatoes I find them quite bitter, but I've noticed that some pubs/restaurants serve them and they taste really sweet. I also had a chicken/donner kebab at the weekend and it had fresh salad/tomatoes on it and the tomatoes where so delicious.
I've tried all the types of tomatoes they sell in tesco and asda but can't find any that taste like this. I've tried all the cherry ones, on the vine, buffalo, salad etc etc.
I'm starting to think they are a 'special' tomato reserved for restaurants and only sold at the cash and carry. Does anyone know where I can get some of these deliciously sweet tomatoes?

Are you seasoning them, some times a little salt, pepper or herb seasoning can bring out the taste.
I bought some a while ago that were red and green striped, not cheap but really tasty. Try more expensive one in places like Waitrose etc. for something different to the basic ones.
Time of year, freshness etc. can make a difference to how good they can taste. Try growing your own next year.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
Try sains taste the diff Vitoria, I am eating them right now like sweets!mortgage free 3/10/12:)0

salt.
Kebab vans often salt them.
Can also be the temperature served at. If you have left them in the fridge for a while they will not be as flavoursome as being left out.0 -
Grow your own! I've just started picking my homegrown hanging basket tomatoes and they are unbelievably sweet. I bought two plants, £1 each, and there are hundreds of these lovely sweet tiny tomatoes developing, and I pick a good handful each day. Eat them like sweets - lovely!0

Tomatoes taste different through the seasons, usually around now they are lovely and sweet.
With a bit of salt.. Yummy0 -
try leaving them out in the sun to ripen a bit more before eating, and even eat them while still warm.
My granny used to sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar on top when grilling.
I really couldn't eat tomatoes (or potatoes) without salt.0 -

These are lovely. And Lidl's baby plum packs are good too as are Waitrose Red Choice.
As Eric's mum says, make sure they're ripe before eating & if you can't store them elsewhere, it's best to take them out of fridge a while before you need them to let them come to room temperature.0 -
Don 't keep them in the 'fridge !0

Yep - plus to bear in mind that they aren't at their best/in season that long in the UK and the rest of the year shop ones are just mostly awful.
Pets used to like Sultans Jewel from Waitrose. Not had them in ages though. The IOW tomatoes are often good too.0 -
I'm lucky in that I have several supermarkets within a ten minute drive. I find Sainsburys tomatoes to be the best flavour, and according to friend who works there, the same supplier supplies their premium range, and the value range. Also, I never keep them in a fridge, and put them on the windowsill in the sun to ripen a bit more. They seem to last several days.
Now eating home grown ones, which are lovely.0
