You say you turned off data roaming? As far as I was aware you can turn off Roaming (calls/texts) but I didn't think this stopped data. Someone correct me if I am wrong but don't you have to turn off GPRS/3G data etc to stop data. This allows you to call and text but no data passes via the network.

Turning off the data roaming stops the data being used on another i.e foreign network, so you don't rack up extra costs outwith whatever deal you may have at home.

Texts and picture messages tend to cost more when abroad so to stop them you need to disable your phone. Either have it switched off or in airplane mode.

Yeah I just spotted it on my phone. I thought for some reason data and roaming were separate otpions. I thought I may have had it wrong.

Note the "wherever you travel in the world"

Learn something new everyday i thought it was just EU countries this applied to.

Back to the OP's case im not sure how this could ever happen as with T Mobile you cant use the internet abroad without buying boosters?

    As per this page

    Internet Travel Boosters

To use the internet on your phone in a country in one of our international zones you'll need to buy one of our Internet Travel Boosters. When you try and go on the internet either through your phone browser or via an app you'll be offered a choice of Boosters relevant to the country you are in.

Turkey is in international Zone A therefore this would apply

If you are in International Zone A or E you can buy a 3MB Booster for £5, a 10MB Booster for £10, or a 50MB Booster for £30

So in theory the bill can only have been run up with calls and texts and not data

As far as I am aware, switching data roaming off prevents it from switching networks whilst abroad.

You need to switch mobile data off to prevent any internet charges

I might be wrong though but thats what i thought

Not the case. Even with data roaming off you can use any number of available foreign networks.

Last week I was on three different ones in France with my data roaming off.

Network 'Roaming' is use of calls and texts on another network
'Mobile Data' is your normal network for data at home.
'Data roaming' is use of data whilst on another network.

Airplane mode will stop all calls, text and data.

You may still use your phone and texts whilst on another network with Data roaming disabled, just not internet.

You can turn the Mobile Data Network off completely, which will extend your battery life if you just want to allow just calls and texts.

It is wise to disable all synchronisation services (address book, social networks etc) before data roaming to save the data allowance if and when you turn data roaming on.

Soon as you finish using data on another network, disable 'Mobile data' and 'Data Roaming' again.

If you are not sure, turn off your Mobile Data until you get home and just use Wi-Fi where you find it.

You do not need to enable Mobile Data to use Wi-Fi.
