TV Broke down 6 months outside of warranty, do I have a claim?

Well folks, in total contrast to my previous experience, Tesco were very fair so far.
Phoned them up, and told them the problem. They took the details of the TV, the receipt number etc, then to my utter shock, HE told me I had a claim against Tesco under the Sale of Goods act. I didn't even need to bring it up.
So it now gets referred to a team who will look at the intrinsic value based on a 2 year old TV, they'll work out what it's worth and either pay me for that, or they'll pay for a repair at no cost to myself.
I'll post back what finally happens, but thanks for the help everyone.0 -
Bearing in mind what it is, its age and its current functional condition, a carefully considered estimate of one penny would be a serious over-valuation of it.
I'd opt for the free repair and get that guaranteed, if I were you. :money:
Don't be surprised by Tesco's reaction. Sir Terry Leahy was a remarkably enlightened man and he inculcated into all Tesco's staff the mantra of always refunding, with charm, a dissatisfied customer.
He could see that the financial cost to Tesco of doing this and keeping the customer happy is far outweighed by the profit Tesco will make from the contented customer then returning every week and spending £200 in the shop instead of decamping, disgruntled, to one of Tesco's competitors and spending his money with them.
By contrast, I doubt if Sky, which enjoys and exploits a monopoly, has the faintest clue just how greatly it is despised by its customers.
And if it did, Sky would probably be extremely proud of it.

Wish he'd taught that to the customer service desk in store. They've been downright awful with me in the past, and I'm not someone who returns things often.
Still I'm glad to see a company that was willing to inform me of my rights, rather than me having to get the law enforced.
Will see what comes of it.

No offence was intended. Truly Please forgive my hyperbole.
I was simply weighing up its scrap value and comparing that to the cost of repairing it.
Even functional two year old televisions aren’t worth much on the open market.
The cost of collecting it, repairing it and returning it would be likely to exceed its current value.
(But you can be sure that somebody will now emerge from the shadows and contradict me.)

Well let's see what the result is, but anything at this point is better than scrapping it and having to pay outright for a new one.
This effectively becomes like an insurance situation I suppose where someone has to take a stab at a value for something, and tell you what they think it's worth. I will be interested to see what they say.0 -

We bought a Sony TV from Tesco's thinking it would last longer than the cheap tat we're used to. It broke after 2yrs 10 months. We paid £550 for it and an independent engineer quoted £150 to fix it. We first contacted Sony who said it was reasonable to expect their TVs to last at least 5 years. Then we contacted Tesco's who seemed very friendly and helpful to begin with until they offered us just £45. We refused this and are going to try the credit card company.

Tesco contacted me and are giving me £90. It's not the best ending to this, but it's not the worst either.
I asked the guy how they calculated the devaluation and it's done per year, so had it broken a month earlier I would have got some more, but it's 2 years and a little under a month old so it's less.
£90 is better than nothing, which I think is what a lot of people would get because they just don't know their rights, or think it's out of warranty and they're out of luck.
A repair by the TV company itself is £100 as it turns out (not £144 as I previously thought), so that does leave me with the option of getting it repaired for as little as £10, or £90 towards a new TV.
