Outdoor litter tray

Anyone know if that works on midges as well as flies? If it does, I'll buy 100

I think it is specifically for flies I am afraid.
It is fascinating to see how many thousands it attracts. rather pungent smelling though and I always panic trying to dispose of the full trap without spilling the evil liquid.
I hate flies, I mean, really hate them0 -
We bought a covered litter tray a few years ago. We filled it with kitty litter and the little terrors never even looked in it, I think they thought it was a garden ornament. The snails loved it though!
I was loath to bin it, so it languished in the garage until last year when a stray cat decided to move into my mums garden. She took the outdoor litter tray and filled it with blankets which stray kitty loved. Even though stray kitty is now allowed indoors she still likes to sleep in the outdoor tray!
Love the idea of the gravel tray and pea shingle. Might have to try that, 2 of my indoor kitties have started to do their business in the outdoor pen, which is a nightmare to clean up.0 -
I love the idea of an outdoor litter tray but aside from the fly issue - I just can't see our two going for it. When we move, we're going to fence off the back garden as it's an average size and will be easy to 'catio'. And I thought maybe I'd get a kennel or a small cat-sized shed, and put the litter in there with 24/7 cat flap access via the back door.
But I reckon after all the time and effort, my two will prefer their warm, sheltered, frequently cleaned out indoor litter tray. They also seem to relish an audience.
And as my husband says, would you want to go outside to wee if you had the choice?

We did until last year
.
Actually I am just bumping to say a huge thanks to paddy paws. ( reminded by the bunny thread)
The red top flycatchers we bought are heaving with flies in the most disgusting manner, and the flies in the house, though not gone, are fewer.
Feeding cats is still a bit of a pain, but we have decided after a trial of a few of these to, gulp, buy a big bulk order for the yard for next summer. Hopefully we can reduce the problem significantly.0 -
lostinrates....I' m very glad that you are happy with the flycatchers.
I have one of these

on my back door and it keeps 99% of the flies out. Ugly, but cheap and functional.0 -

I used to live in places where netted windows and doors were the norm, I think they are fab. If it were just the door here I would do it, but we have three kitchen outside doors, all of which get opened at some time or another each day, plus all the windows through out the house...including the one we cannot mesh as its 'the cat access'.
Living in a very old house mesh in many ways would be ideal, you need to open windows to allow the house to breathe,0 -
I hear what you are saying lostinrates....but that device is more like a net curtain (which I hate) with magnets joining the two halves together. I have my back door permanently open if weather allows and the cats....and me...can come and go freely through that curtain but it still keeps flies out.0

Sorry, I have a rushed and incomplete reply. Our house is decrepid, but popular with local artists and postcard people. (Despite the goddamn awful windbreak fence we put up last winter...the just pretend it doesn't exist and scowl at us) We couldn't put them at the front, it would cause outrage,
. so if we put them at the back it would be a bit useless...as flies would just come in the front!
The red tops have been fab though. I think en masse they will bring things down to a much more normal level. Ask type now fom my kitchen there is just one fly, (I was typing not one, then one flew by :rotfl:)
