Outdoor litter tray

Someone on this board was going to try an out door undercover litter tray but I cannot remember who.
I just wanted to know how it was going and if it had been successful. I remember suggesting using something non moisture sensitive because I thought a clumping litter might just absorb all the moisture in the environment and go solid...
I'm thinking about buying a small kennel and popping a tray with wood shavings in it and changing twice a day to reduce pressure on our indoor trays and just wondered if it had worked or been a total non starter ....

I imagine it would be absolutely covered with flies in no time if they are used. Not trying to be dismissive but would hate for you to fork out for a kennel and have wasted your money.0

No, good point, especially as we we are on a dairy farm and have more flies than average.
ATM the litter trays are in a down stairs lobby and an upstairs hallway....looking to site a third and not near where they eat or in a room!0 -
I think it might have been me.:) I did buy a covered litter tray but I haven't used it outside as I just thought it would attract flies and insects. Also we keep getting frogs in our garden at night and I didn't like the idea of finding a frog in there.:eek:0

I use outdoor trays for my cats, my cats are no longer free roaming due to neighbour issues and I have a large pen in my garden. The trays are the covered type but they are situated under the roofed part of the pen so have protection from rain etc.
I have not had any problems with flies at all and I just use the lightweight white litter. Much as I love my cats it's so much better having the trays outside

have you tried a Booda Clean Step? http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=776&pf_id=54230&utm_source=ShoppingFeed&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CKT56a2_6LgCFeXMtAodBTQAbQ These aren't made for outdoor use specifically and have a filter area in the top so you would need to cover that but they are pretty much enclosed and the inside would therefore be protected from most of the elements. I have one at home and it's great but I've only used it indoors.0

I have one of the outdoor ones from Zooplus, using OKO clumping litter in it. The litter does get very slightly damp but not enough to stop it working pretty well. I don't have an issue with flies around it either unlike the indoor trays I cannot claim to scoop it daily.
OP....if you live on a farm have you ever tried those Red Top Fly catchers? Revoltingly fascinating for how many THOUSANDS of flies they gather.0 -

No, but off to google and buy NOW.
anything that kills flies wins here.
Thank you:j0 -
My garden-bound three legged fella chose to poop on anything in the garden that he could dig in, so I made him an outdoor tray using a gravel mixing tray and a bag of pea shingle. I punched holes in the bottom of the tray to let it drain. I scoop the poop daily and then wash it down with boiling water and Jeyes Fluid once a week. He occasionally poops elsewhere but the tray has been a big success.
He was digging and pooping in my garden's shingled areas anyway, at least this way I can locate the "surprises" in the lucky dip tray and my tortoise doesn't crawl through a pile of poop.0 -

Anyone know if that works on midges as well as flies? If it does, I'll buy 100
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0
