There is a difference between a 'Best Before' date and a 'Use By' date though.

As said above, 'best before' means just that, it's best before a specified date. However 'use by' is normally put on foods that may be harmful if consumed after said date.

That's why The Food Standard Agency etc. also come up says their are billions of pounds worth of perfectly good food wasted each year because people dont know the difference between 'best before' and 'use by' dates.

the first thing i do if i but chocolate is to check the date.

But selling a Best Before item after the BBD they have done nothing wrong. Are you sure you never picked this up from one of their many Reduced price shelves.

It is strange for a store like Asda to have such an item that far past the BBD due to their stock rotation system and footfall.

its not that uncommon, mistakes can happen. When i used to work at tescos, we occasionally found stuff at the back of the shelf that are years out of a date.

its just not really possible to check every products date every day of the week

so they dont restock shelves then, its a simple thing to do when restocking shelves. if products are left years out of date it shows they dont sell so why stock them.

sometimes things get pushed to the back, or behind other products, sometimes they get moved to other places of the store. Sometimes when stocking shelves, especially for longer life products, where they will only check some of the products if they all appear to be the same date then the new ones will get places infront.

Afterall, why spend awhile checking 100's of items when they all appear to be of the same date. Why spend time you dont have moving out all the items to place others behind them when they are clearly from the same batch.

And yes, there are some items that dont sell very well and can be on the shelves for some time, but what else would you do with them?

no excuse the shelf stacking staff should check these on a regular basis as this would mean shelves inches thick in dust along with stock.

If they dont sell then a good management team would have these items packed and sent back to distribution warehouse so the shelf can be used for stock that does sell.
