PlusNet - just joined and regretting it!

Was speaking to an online assistant at PlusNet last week who stated the following (kept the chat!):

Jonathan: Okay great, we are moving to a new tenancy agreement with a BT line, the landlady wants to keep the BT line and I wondered how that work with Plusnet
Courtney: If there's a BT line and it's active... we'll have no problem retaining it.
Courtney: Simply enter in the number with the postcode and the Confirm Your Choice page should let you know if that's fine.
Courtney: Want me to check?
Jonathan: The only thing is the current tenant obviously owns that number so not sure how it would work to simply transfer it over to us?
Courtney: Yes, that's correct. We can offer a "broadband only" package or simply take over the line.
Jonathan: Do we need to let the previous tenant know?
Jonathan: as we obviously have no contact with them
Jonathan: the number is _________
Courtney: It's not a requirement, but it's always a courteous thing to do, yes.
Courtney: Thank you.
Courtney: Fantastic news!
Courtney: We are indeed able to keep the number.

Then the advisor went on to talk me through but didn't advise me to get a MAC code. Phoned to double check, told we wouldn't need a MAC code, placed the order (in my boyfriend's name) and told we need a MAC code! Previous tenant maybe unable to get one and then I'm not sure what that means as they have now since told me that a take over request maybe rejected by BT. Are we now stuck in a contract (with terrible customer service!) with PlusNet though we may be unable to have a line with them?!

Why would you need a MAC, a MAC is used by an existing customer of an ISP to transfer to another ISP.

If you are a new customer at your address and phone number then a MAC is not required, you cannot take over the previous tenants broadband.

I think to take over the phone number. I want to change it from BT to PlusNet, though they seem to not know what they're doing. They advised us to take the phone number over.

You said in your OP that the landlady wants you to stay with BT for line rental, a MAC has nothing to do with a phone number, as I stated a MAC is used by an existing customer of an ISP to transfer their broadband only to another ISP, it cannot be used to transfer from customer to customer.

You need to get BT to transfer the phone rental to you when that is done then you can apply for broadband only from Plusnet.

Thanks, maybe that's the confusion because the advisor later told me that we could just transfer it back at the end if the tenancy, no fees of questions.

Sounds like Plusnet are trying to get you to sign up for phone rental and broadband with them, get the phone line transferred to you by BT then apply for broadband only don't let them try to make you take both.

I have been with them for several years but have my line rental with BT and broadband only with them.

Yes, they were keen for us to go with them. My boyfriend is going to cancel the order tomorrow.

We will go with BT line rental which I assume will still need a MAC code. Then when that is sorted go with plusnet for broadband if they are not sneaky about it anymore!

I just hope they let us cancel as they've put in a line request (or something!) from BT.

No. As you've already been told, A MAC has nothing to do with line rental. Since you are not transferring a broadband service, you don't need one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
