flight delay compensation

My wife and I were travelling from alicante to liverpool by Easy-jet and turned up at the airport, checked in, bording passes given and sent to the departure lounge, about an hour or so the monitor said 'Flight delayed' then an hour later 'Flight cancelled'.We were then told that the next flight that we could get on was in 3 DAYS time but if it was not convenient we could make other arrangements, we did and flew home later that day after paying for another flight with Monarch. The following day I received an E-Mail from Easy-jet telling me that the flight had been cancelled THE DAY AFTER the flight was cancelled.The letter was ridiculous.After E-Mails back and forward we were Refused even a refund but eventually given the cost of the difference between what we payed Monarch and what we payed Easy-jet, they would not give any other expenses I incured eg. £80 for taxi.
I would like to know have I lost any right to compensation because I took the small amount of money offered from Easy-jet. Any thoughts.

Whether you are due compensation will depend on why the flight was cancelled...if you start at the FAQs on the first page
