Parents: How Do You Make Working Work?

I think the responsible adult idea, as well as the other ideas about earning money from home, are excellent ones that you should pursue. I did Avon while a student and you can make good money from that if you're prepared to put the effort in. Bear in mind that it is VERY difficult to make money from blogging (I know...I have three! And I still can't give up work to just sit on my tod and blog, sadly.).

I think some people on this thread don't understand how it is when their partner works away a lot. Mine is away at least 3-4 times a month. Sometimes it can be just for one night; other times it can be for almost a week. It is NEVER regular and it is NEVER planned far in advance. Taking on any sort of job when you have kids to work around and you are at times the only one at home is a bit of a minefield to say the least. I don't have kids yet, but know that when I do have them, something will have to give (I'll need to live a lot closer to where I work, for a start: 2.5-hour round trip commute + kids + husband away at times does not make for easy childcare organisation!).
