I know that direct line are not on comparison sites. But are there other companies that are not listed who are worth doing a manual website quote ?

I've found Aviva to be very good.

Unlikely to be worth while phoning anyone, checking on their websites is normally the cheapest route. Aviva and DL are the biggest players in terms of direct insurers. There are plenty of small brokers that dont but you'd be there forever if you wanted to contact all of them.

Obviously check Quidco to see anyone who's offering decent cashback for comparison.

    I agree.....
  • Having got a quote for pet insurance from DIRECT LINE, I wanted to talk through some detailson the phone. After 3 attempts waiting for 5 minutes each, the calls were dropped. Cost quite a bit too. If they cannot answer enquiries before a sale what would they be like with a claim? I sticking with the Coop.

Aviva via quidco/topcashback without a doubt.

I did a quidco search and direct quote request last year, quidco premium was around £25 more expensive which was roughly the cashback amount!

Aviva dont seem to like young male drivers for some reason. I got quoted 7 grand for a £1800 car when I first requested quote - the same cover Admiral did for just £1030

Have you ever tried dealing with the Coop for a claim?

I am sure they've got better in the last 10 years but when I used to deal with them in claims you had to speak to the file handler, they referred to themselves as Mr Smith or Mrs Hart etc rather than Paul or John etc and frequently even if you did get to the right person they couldnt give you an update because "Mr Kumar" was on THE computer.

Now there's personal service and theirs antiquated service and theirs certainly used to fit into the later. NFU Mutual used to be nearly as bad too but at least they seemed to have a computer each.

I see to be alone in never having a decent quote off Aviva. I guess I've never driven a car they actually like!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Nearest they've ever got for me has been double what I've actually insured for. They actually phoned me to see if I wanted to take the cover out and I said no because it was twice as expensive as my cheapest quote.

The chap insisted they'd be able to do better over the phone because they could tailor it more.

I suggested he wouldn't be able to improve by £250 but he said it might do that. with 10 mins to spare I said yes.

It came down £20 and he apologised for being a bit of a numpty which was nice of him. Still didn't take out the over priced policy though.
