***Changes to fees for private sellers***

Hello,
From 4 September, final value fees for all private sellers will change, as well as insertion fees for private sellers with a Basic Shop.
Final value fees change for all private sellers
Final value fees will be charged based on the combined value of the item listed plus postage. For example, if an item sells for £20 with postage cost of £4, the final value fee will be charged based on the combined value of £24. This will not apply if the listing offers collection only.

Insertion fees changes for private sellers with a Basic Shop
Private sellers with a Basic Shop subscription will not pay insertion fees on their first 200 listings per month. This is an increase from the previous 20 listings. Insertion fees for subsequent listings will be £0.20 for all categories - media items will no longer be priced differently.
Additionally, insertion fees for auction-style listings will be reduced and the number of bands will go down to two.
Auction-style listings with a starting price between £0.01 and £0.99 will still receive the monthly 100 free insertion fee allowance. From the 101 st listing, the insertion fee will be £0.05 for all categories including media (a change from £0.05 for media and £0.10 for all other categories).
For listings with a starting price above £1.00, the number of starting price bands will reduce from five to one. These items will be charged an insertion fee of £0.15 for all categories.
These changes will simplify the fees for sellers, allowing you to list more fixed price items at no additional cost and experiment with selling higher value items in auction format.
Regards,
The eBay Team

So it is now a completely unfair system for any business seller without a shop who will now be paying 30p per listing over 99p compared to 20p for a private seller, yee thanks ebay. Nice to see how much they 'value' the smaller businesses.

I can see why people selling in the collectable categories like me might be tempted to list as a private seller and not a business.

MAYBE it'll stop the blatant postage gouging that goes on

For business selllers maybe but not for private sellers as they still need to use 99p listings to get them free.

The listing fees, returns policy and fees charged and now markedly different depending on how a seller is registered.

Quite, some sellers may now have to work out how much their fees will be all on their own!

Whether we'll stop seeing inflated postage charges will depend on the private sellers working out if they may be better off as business sellers. From what I can gather, come September I'll be quite a bit better off as a business seller with a shop. I already charge inclusive postage, so no increase in FVFs and I get 200 free listings per month.

Its always been unfair as private sellers would get 100 Free listings when a business seller was charged. They even took away free classified ads so business sellers could not take advantage of this.

I would understand business seller's anguish if eBay was saying you can have just one account: private or business, that's it! ...But that's not the case, is it?

The (admittedly only a few) eBay business sellers I know have both business accounts for business stuff AND private accounts for private stuff. Surely having a foot in both camps is the best position to be in and open to all business sellers (but, in contrast, not available to private sellers - like myself).

My issue is with the huge amounts of business sellers mis representing themselves as private sellers. OK it might be different in some categories, but look in collectables/ vintage/antique categories, some of my competitors have shops and trading names and yet show as private sellers. By doing the right thing I am being penalised even though I have only a smidgeon of the items listed that many of the private sellers have.

  • Our local chimney sweep was aghast when I told him that he should have a business account on ebay (he buys and sells antique jewellery), as in his eyes he's not operating a business, but 'a hobby' and therefore it doesn't count!

Just doing a quick search in categories I use a lot turns these up- these are just chosen randomly. Yes they might just have very cluttered houses stuffed with collectable items but it all seems too sleek

I've used a private account for selling but always find I get better prices using my business account. I have lots of regular customers on my business account and subscribers, so I usually get 15-20% more by using it. If I can get an extra fiver that is a bit better than saving 15p.
