Right to buy

I have just brought my right to buy house from the council with a £16,000 discount. I heard that the law has NOT been past to reduce the right to buy discount from £38,000 to £16,000. Does anybody know how true this is? can I claim the reminding £22,000 from the council?

Why do some people expect to get something for nothing?

This scheme should have been scrapped years ago - why should my tax money go towards paying for somebodies home? First a reduced rent, then a discount?

Your council will have given you the discount that you were entitled to.

As this scheme is up and running there is not alot tax payers can do, but surely this will save us tax payers subbing rent money and the council will no longer have to pay to maintain the property and pay the wages to fix it up.

Or.. sell it to the highest bidder.. Why should we keep roof over the head of everybody who asks for it? I know of alot of people who work and can afford to rent privately, but choose to rent from the council because of the low rent. AND, they will most likely be offered a discount if they want to buy..

but it is really hard to get a council or housing association tenancy? There are all sorts of criteria? Not as if just anyone can take advantage??

If they have been in their homes for several years they have probably more than paid for it anyway.

Leaving any moral objections to this home stealing process aside, you would have to consult the local cab to find out about the legal aspects of you buying your property.

Possibly the best sited (and most valuable) council estate in the country is the Golden Lane Estate off the Goswell Road on the Northern Edge of the Square Mile. 10% are council tenants these days. I've yet to meet one that doesn't work for the City of London Corporation (i.e. the local council), mostly in the housing department.
