I currently run a cracking Acer Revo nettop pc (bought after advice on here) with Windows 7 but after seeing my brother's Win 8 last night just fell in love with it !
I do not have a touchscreen pc but having run 'upgrade assistant' it says my pc is fine to use it.
I have three questions I guess :
1. Is it any good and what are the upsides / downsides
2. If I decide to go ahead - are there any offers about ? Win 8 is £100 on the MSoft website and if I remember correctly Pro is 190 or 200.
3. Should I wait a year or two when I upgrade my pc and get it automatically then ! Chances are I would buy a touchscreen.
As usual before I decide to do anything, I have come on here to hear your reasoned arguments and heed any advice that I am given.
Thanks
Richard

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

What spec is the nettop PC? One of the main advantages of Windows 8 is improved performance over Windows 7 particularly for lower end hardware which can feel quite a bit more responsive. There's a lot of other smaller improvements across the board which you gradually appreciate.
The main downside is that initially it feels quite different and for many people that's very offputting although with a little time spent with it you quickly get used to the changes and there's various free options if you want to put the old style start menu back.
My main annoyance with Windows 8 is that there is no one click mode to set it to desktop mode, on the original install most filetypes open in their touch version rather than the desktop version so I need to set the file defaults to use the desktop version and I get rid of the touch application shortcuts from the start screen. Admittedly after that it doesn't look or behave much different to Windows 7 but I've got used to the better performance, much better task manager, direct power tools access, individual hardware event logs etc.

Goodness me ... two people who say Win 8 is better than Win 7.
I've *never* heard anyone admit to liking Win8 before!!! :cool:0 -

It is a whole lot better than Win 7, as Johnmcl7 say initially it is daunting which puts off some people and it takes a little to get used to the new start/menu layout, but once to get used to that you notice the difference0 -

Due to my old PC packing up I ordered a new one that came with Win8 and I must admit that it took a day or so to get used to the "new" format but I now would not use anything else. To me the format is straight forward and very easy to use and for one of an older generation anything that is new may look daunting at the start but a bit of try it and see will soon have people wondering why they did not bite the bullet far sooner.

I'm not a Techie person but having used both, personally, I prefer Windows 7.
There's too many things I want to change on 8.0 -
I wonder how many times this reply box will allow me to copy paste Say No To Windows 8 Say No To Windows 8 Say No To Windows 8???
Windows 8 makes your machine faster, but it's OS makes greater graphical demands on your system leading to overload.
Windows 7 is like traditional windows - you know how to get to things.
In windows 8 there is specific paths you have to take to reach your goal. If you get in the backend regularly (I believe) it is a hassle and a half.
So I think that, hey, if you're willing to learn all about Windows 8, then do yourself some justice and move over to Linux. Both willl have a learning curve and linux is way cooler (But... if you have a laptop then be wary of linux. It's not always a match made in heaven)
Meanwhile, back in a windows 8 user's life, they're tricking themselves into thinking that "if its new, it must be better".... Windows Vista anyone?0
