Agreed - it may not have been made clear to the OP that the charge was going to be put on the new card, especially if they took her debit card and she had to enter her PIN as well!

It would have been very clear on the receipt, whether the transaction had been paid by Debit Card or would be charged to the newly opened account. Even if the OP has presumed the transaction was charged to the Debit Card, the fact that the money was never taken from her current account, should have alerted her to check the receipt or query the issue with Debenhams.

They then fail to send you a statement in time for you to make a payment by the due date so the first you know about it is receiving a letter saying you've missed a payment and are being charged.

No reputable organisation would attempt such a trick. The fine from the FCA would outweigh any profit made. The OP is this instance has highlighted their own oversight by notifying a change in address or having their mail forwarded.

However, Santander Cards are very, very iffy when it comes to sending out statements and taking payments. I had a card owned by them a couple of years ago and recall that they regularly failed to send statements or sent the statements out very late. I always made payments by the due date regardless of this but it was very poor service and made me a teeny bit suspicious as I know the same has happened to friends using Santander Cards. They also always took the absolute maximum amount of time possible (as given on the back of the statements) to credit payments to your account. On other CCs I've had these are the outside limits for crediting payments to accounts not the norm. Combine this with late/missing statements and it's not surprising that some people will fail to make payments on time....while Santander Cards might not technically be doing anything wrong it's very poor service if not a bit fishy..
