HTC ONE & SIM only deal

....which one would you get? And what SIM only deal would you get?

We're looking to get a sim free version as Junior's off on his travels next year so he could take it with him and get a local sim to use.

As for the SIM was thinking of getting a12 month contract and then converting that to a payg which can be used once a month inorder to keep his number for when he comes back.

Can you do this with giffgaff btw?

Giffgaff don't offer 12 month contracts.

You can set up a recurring "goodybag" that resets every month and offers a min/SMS/data allowance. When he goes away you would just simply stop the recurring goodybag and just make a call every 5 months or so to keep the number live.

If its android you are after I doubt you could buy better. It's a top class handset, with excellent sound and built to a far higher standard than the SGS3 or SGS4.

it's a lot of money to outlay on a phone to go travelling with imo!
you can probably pickup the phone for about 500 quid, then a sim only for 10 quid a month, so for 12 months it would cost you ~£620 (£52 a month) - it might be worth looking at a contract with the handset thrown in

also where is he travelling? phones are quite sought after in some places...

Sorry for any confusion - the reason we haven't looked at contract phones is that most of them are for 24 months and next september he's off to Australia studying for the year. The contract on his current phone (and I had one and we both hate it!) is up now in a fortnight hence the new phone.

My thinking was that if we got him a sim free one then he could take it with him, and get a local sim for when he's out there.

I know that the top of the range is approx £440 but there are others that are cheaper and we were wondering if any of these was good value or should be avoided like the plague.

all I'm saying is to price it out, it might be cheaper to get the handset on a 18/24 month contract than it is buying outright and going sim only for the next 12 months - i.e. overall costs. he could still take the handset away and use different sims
the big exception to that is of course the nexus 4, which will give you a good handset for a lot less and would definitely work out cheaper sim only
