I don't like the flavour of Elsanta either. Supermarkets buy them for their keeping quality and appearance rather than flavour :(

My Cambridge strawberries did me proud this year. Also the Alpines. Raspberries went ballistic and blackberries are following close.Apples, Pears, Plums and Damsons doing well but gooseberries and Jostaberries were failures.

I've found Elsanta ones to be really hit and miss - sometimes they can be lovely, but most of the time they're disappointing. If I see Sonata ones in the supermarket I'll usually pick these over Elsanta. I find Sweet Eve can be nice, but sometimes too sickly sweet!
I bought some Rumba strawberries a few weeks back in Sainsburys and they were HORRIBLE! Mushy, watery, just not nice at all! Like others have said, this year has not been a good strawberry year - usually I can't get enough of them and buy so many over the summer, but this year I keep looking at them and deciding not to bother!

As a home grower of 3 varieties over the past 6 years, this year has been the best year I've had for strawberries!

The slower start then the warmth/dry weather when ripening produced an excellent crop.

It must be regional, in that case. Here (Kent) the flavour of strawberries (both commercial and home grown) doesn't seem to have been very good. The cherries, on the other hand, have been exceptional..

I'm not that far away - London ish! (bit warmer I guess)
Not tried any shop ones this year to compare.

Yum Asda had Capri's in today  Looking online they are new to supermarket shelves this year, and are originally from Italy but grown here in the UK. They are so good I contacted Tesco to tell them so and will do the same for Asda.
  • I don't get all the hate towards Elsanta, I think they can be quite lovely - and far easier to prepare than the likes of Sonata where the roots of the leaves are buried deep within the fruit.

I'd rather have a plump and juicy British Elsanta strawberry than those hideous hard, imported varieties from warmer climes like Spain and the USA when strawberries are out of season in the UK!

The Elsanta strawberries just taste quite watery too me, not buying them again

I avoid them at all costs. We are based in Scotland (Orkney) and try to buy Scottish strawberries, but not ever Elsanta even if grown here!

Yuck I never eat out of season strawberries. I will however take anything grown in the UK in season except Elsanta

Got some from M&S yesterday, Triumph, noticed although it's quite late in the season there is a marked overall improvement in quality.
