It's a hideous variety and I say that both as a buyer and an experienced fruit grower!
I imagine it has some sort of presentational quality, or long shelf life, that makes it appeal to the supermarkets.
That said, despite a lot of early promise, I think this year's strawberries haven't been all that good for the most part - rather sour. It may be a local thing but I hope not as I'm in Kent, where so many are grown!0 -
Elsanta is apparently one of the favourite varieties in the country- not counting me I assure you, I hate them and like you feel they are pale, tasteless and watery.
Like the poster above I think the UK strawberries have not been so good this year. I've had Asda, Tesco Value, Co-op, M&S and local market. Tesco value (Capri) were my first buy of the season and the best hands down.0 -
Strawberries in Angus, Perth and Fife have been lovely this year!
ETA but I agree Elsanta are rubbish.0 -
Eve, Sweet Eve, Sonata are are really good varieties to look out for, sweet eve would be my pick of them all, the flavour is amazing but they havent got as long shelf life as some other varieties.0

Disappointed with the Elsanta strawberries I've grown this year. They were misshapen and are not very sweet - I bought them as plants and am wondering whether they were mislabelled as they were recommended as one of the best varieties for home growing. Certainly won't bother next year.0

Elsanta are a terrible variety. I would rather go without than buy these. Completely tasteless x0

There was a programme on it last year iirc about the reasons supermarkets stock Elsanta, despite not being the one the growers would want to supply for taste etc. It's all quite sad what the supermarkets control with our produce, just for looks. I can't bear shop strawberries, rarely worth buying - pets won't eat them, which shows the difference in sweetness!
I was really pleased with my strawberries this year - think I've got Marshmallow (sp?) and Florence.0 -
I had several punnets of Capri and they were the best strawberries I have ever bought.0

I grow some Elsanta in the garden because I actually like them but the crop this year was rubbish.
The raspberries were excellent. You win some , you lose some.0 -
