Cheapest PAYG for O2 or can you keep the number and change network?

I'm looking for a replacement for my wife's mobile, which is on O2 and she doesn't want to change the number. I'm guessing that the best way is to buy a new mobile and put her SIM in, rather than see if she can carry the number to a new network?

She is after the cheapest phone possible, so the best option so far seems to be to buy an Orange phone from Argos for £10, then have it unlocked, so £15-20 all in. Does anyone know a better deal?

Thanks!

look at the TMobile or Tesco mobile websites to see if they have any cheapo phones. You can port your number. Tesco use the O2 network, but not sure if that's significant. T Mobile have reasonable tariffs on PAYG, better than O2, as do Tesco (check out their 3 fav nos option too). Tesco will also unlock your phone once you've bought £30 of credit, so she can move operator (and port her no) if someone comes in with a better tariff.
Not aware of anyone charging to port a number and it's pretty quick.

I called the T-Mobile porting helpline about this, my gf's phone (PAYG) is on O2 and we want to change to T-Mobile.
They told me that it's only a question of asking O2 for the PAC number, then tell them and it's done in 1 week.

If your wife wants a new phone may I suggest getting a PAYG from Dialaphone on her chosen network?

The reason I say this is because they seem to have a track record with us of supplying phones that are unlocked.

The only phone that I got that was locked recently was a V3 that was apparently specially flashed to accept the T Mobile card. I later found out that according to the IMEI number it was destined for the Middle eastern market, so would have needed to be flashed to cope with UK usage.

The other V3 I ordered at the same time was not flashed in the same way and it was never locked.

DD2s Nokia 6111 on t Mobile PAYG from DAP was never locked and has been successfully used with Vodafone and O2 cards.

She then has a choice of adding the £15 unlocking fee to the £20 she wants to spend and getting something a little better. However if she wants a cheaper phone locked to T mobile with a sim card I have one that may interest her. Feel free to PM me.

Tesco mobile have some great deals at the moment. I think that they are the cheapest for tariffs if you top up with more than £15 per month (10p per min any network and 5p per text), and they have an offer on at the moment for the sim card - pay £10 for the sim and get £20 worth of credit. They will also give you £5 on your account for porting your number over to them.

Oh, forgot to say that they also give you a 10% discount for having a regular automatic online topup so for £15 worth of credit, you pay £13.50. Therefore, with this automatic topup, if you topup monthly with £20 (costing you £18 with the discount), you get for example, 150 mins of talk time and 100 texts for your £18 pay out.

Tesco definitely have some great deals - though they didn't have the phones I wanted. The next cheapest I could find were these deals:
