Short of anymore domestic disasters, I'll be heading out for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests. I missed the famous last series down under (the one we won) but had been to the previous four series. My record is as follows. Seen seven matches, lost seven matches!

Now I'm not hoping for miracles, but is there any chance I can just see one sodding win

I'm surprised the ECB don't pay me to stay away!

Oh well, if the worst comes to the worst, at least I'll be in the sunshine on Christmas day. Sitting on the beach at St Kilda's eating fish and chips! :D

You up for a beer or two Gen?

Sure am. PM me if you fancy a couple of cold ones in Sydney.

Do you see a change in non-professional workers too? The reason I ask is if you look at people who work in libraries, many staff are Library Assistants. This is often an ageing cohort, I would imagine that would be quite hard at 70.

Step down from a physically demanding job, or high intensity concentration job means there needs to be a supply of such jobs for folk to step into. There may not be ..so will there be more capability dismissals and sad ends to great careers? It is a minefield.

Equality also requires you to not discriminate based on protected characteristics ..so you should not preserve particular roles for older workers (they might also be attractive jobs for part time working mums of school age children etc).

The library will need to consider how it manually handles books to enable staff to continue as long as they want whilst there is work to do.

    I am not joking.

The "immigrants steal jobs" brigade never seem to be able to answer why unemployment is lower now than it was in the 80's/90's recessions despite us having 5 million more adults.
    It's measured differently.

    Which team do you support?

England, Surrey and NSW in that order.

Tottenham and Sydney FC in the soccer.

I don't subscribe ti the 'lump of labour' fallacy - work creates its own demand - ie me having a job doesn't mean there is one less job for someone else as what I earn I will spend thus making jobs for other people. If there were a fixed amount of work how come the workforce has ever changed since medieval times when the country had less than 10m people?

    .

No lump however you imagine perfect market responsiveness and timing. There are lead and lag times, creating booms and slumps, mismatches of demand and supply.

A good example is in NHS nurse recruitment...a few years ago there was a lot of overseas recruitment, then there were cuts in nursing posts, then the was mid staffs , then there was a lot of overseas recruitment to fill the new demand for additional nurses... It takes 3 years to educate/train a nurse, 12 years for consultant.

When did Robbie Williams morph into Morrisey?

At the same point he decided he could be the next Sinatra (his accent was decidedly moveable during that concert on TV tonight!).
    Robbie's odd looking these days.

Has had a hair transplant. And he looked as though he was in a fat suit type thing when he was in the harness in the air.

Dangerously close to on topic...have any NP thought about the impact of raising state pension age?

I am lucky enough to have a pension through my job, but changes to it mean that it won't be available at the full rate until I'm 65 (instead of 60), and the state pension age was increased in the budget to 68.

I know that I am far better off than many, but the thought of working until what will probably be 70 (I expect the age to rise again, given that it was only a couple of years ago it was raised to 67 for my age group) is just depressing. :(

It is a minefield I am glad not to be involved in. But (not necessarily from work as much as observations around me) I think this has already started. Heaven knows what it will be like if people find it hard to stay in current role until 65, then find that they are expected to work to, say, 70 but find that the mind is willing but the body says no, yet the person is not considered disabled.

This is why I'm determined to call it a day at 65. I also know that if I stop before that I'll manage.

Well the only other answer seems to be the Logan's Run solution:eek: If there are not enough working people to support the number of non-working people then the non-workers will have to get less unless technology can provide a solution....
    I think....

The older you get, the harder it becomes to get picked for a job. A recent report said a woman of 50, laid off, if not working after a year is more likely to die than get another job.

My brother had a crush on Jessica from Logan's Run, it was a great programme to watch as a teenager, when 30 seemed really, really old.

I know that there's no easy alternative, but this is why I don't understand why people are so fatalistic about it and don't plan. Of course it isn't possible for everyone, but I suspect we all know people for whom it is possible but just don't get round to it.
