The most amazing thing is that the fires are being fought by about 3-4,000 people at any given time almost all of whom are volunteers that don't even get expenses.
We've lots of 100% volunteer fire brigades in the UK - where I lived they were all volunteers on call out.
It's what people do ..... especially where, like in Aus, there's a single, dangerous, identified, risk to life ....
3,000-4,000's probably not a huge percentage - and it gets them out of the house on practice nights.0 -

So long, Mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But though I may roam,
I'll come back to my home,
Although it may be
A pile of debris.
Remember, Mommy,
I'm off to get a commie,
So send me a salami,
And try to smile somehow.
I'll look for you when the war is over,
An hour and a half from now!

Didn't Tom Lehrer say he gave up satire when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize?

Nah. It was a small Toyota Hilux, our equivalent of the White Van.
Definitely lost in translation then - I thought it was a utility vehicle which I thought was a 4x4 and now I learn it was a tranny.
During the family get together one of the girlfirends is an American and we were giving her a quiz on English words/expressions like 'dogs dinner' etc.I think....0 -

Have you been 'prepping' again Lir?
You know, I didn't find prepping bad. I was more or less empty anyway, and so nothing to come out. Did a fart after procedure, and did it in the loo just in case, but it was ok.
Have eyeclinic next week, would definitely swap that for another colonoscopy. Actually......wouldn't mind one of those monthly.....I never got the point of colonic irrigation before that, now I understand that clean feeling. S different from just 'not eating for a week'0 -

I'm starting to get my sense of humour back. I'm now about to hobble the length of the busiest street in Sydney. In Lycra & covered in oil.0 -

The fire brigade who came to us a few weeks ago were all 'retained' and all happy to escape xfactor and drink tea in our garden.
I was very grateful to them.
A local lane is unadopted, long and tricky access when wet. Some pernickity folk we knew who lived at the end of the lane complained about the damage a fire engine did to the road whilst attending an incident.
They got a fix that made them very unpopular with the neighbours....a letter to all houses in the lane advising them that only a landrover would attend calls in future as access was insufficient.0
