That and one of the benefits of having my own place is that I no longer have to hear my flatmate (or hopefully neighbours as I'm not directly joined to any) having sex
Ewwwww.
I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone else having sex. Fortunately....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
If anybody's a Paul McCartney fan - tomorrow, 3pm, HMV, Oxford St, he'll be there.
I told him you'd not be interested, but he insisted I tell you all anyway.0 -

Where I was 5 years ago, I could tell the bloke in the flat above me was shagging 2 different women as his style changed... I could also tell when he was "home alone" so to speak ... tugging.0 -

One of them even got to have the torch (as there are no lightbulbs).
All rooms have lightbulbs, carpets and curtains (edit - they were all left behind). I even have one more bed than bedroom (as the dining room has been used as a bedroom).
And they got fed!0 -

'Fortunately' I only knew what was going on when it was about to come to, errr, a climatic ending! But that also meant that there wasn't enough time to leave the building. I was of course pleased that my flatmate was in a loving relationship, but I can't say I'm going to miss hearing that however many times a weekend.0 -

Never? Not at university or in a hotel or loos in a restaurant or anything?
Impressive. I'm damning a lot of the sound insulation I've spent nights next to now I know its possible to never hear others ever. Halls were terrible in particular. Then the flat we shared, and the one after. And yeah, quite a few hotels.....and
I've heard a lot of sex I wasn't involved in. I'm never envious of sex in public loos. I mean, not everyone likes mood lighting and candles but.....a loo?0 -

I loved my old flat which had a metre of concrete between our flat on the 1st floor and the ground floor below us. Couldn't hear a thing, and no neighbours on either side.
The Victorian conversion we live in now is not soundproof but the layout means that our bedroom doesn't border anyone else's and the worst thing we get it our living room is piano noise from downstairs, which I actually don't mind. Thank god....0 -
Puzzled as to how one stays up? Is it because they soak it with water? I would find it scary.
How do the fires start usually?
They don't stay up so much as down: they are holes in the ground with a metal 'lid'. Most people make them to store papers but you hear of stay and defend people using them to shelter as the fire front comes over.
Up to a third are started deliberately. Often that is now treated as attempted murder and known fire bugs are sometimes rounded up on the highest risk days. Discarded cigarettes are common starters as are broken bottles.
Then there's lightning strikes on dry days (something Id neer seen before moving here) and back burning (fires set to reduce undergrowth and burn away fuel) that gets out of control.
Then there's people simply being dumb. The biggest fire on Black Saturday was started by an electricity line that had been badly installed 30 years earlier. Another notorious fire was started by someone using an angle grinder on a fire ban day.0 -
SIL's then BF said his motivation for selling his flat years ago was to get away from hearing the shagging dogs in the flat next door!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
