Oh Gen! How frustrating about the air con.
And then just when you're having a trying day, along comes my comment which must have felt like criticism of you. I'm sorry.
It really truly wasn't meant as a dig at you. I know business works completely differently from education and that I would never be able to adapt to the mindset. I also know that just because it's different, or even just because I don't like it, that doesn't mean it's wrong.
I was wrong, though, to say you were appointing on a whim. I did know, actually, that there were plenty of elements of your selection proceedure that aren't whim-like at all. It's just the thing of ruling people out on the holiday question that doesn't sit well with me. But that's OK, because probably a lot of what goes on in my world wouldn't sit well with you or other people who belong in the business world. We frequently observe admin/HR/finance people who come to work in education after being in business just don't get a lot of things about "the way things are done".
Also... not caring whether it's fair to the candidates as long as you appoint a reasonably competent one - I get it that that's expedient in your world, and how things have to be. I imagine you can understand why assessing everybody fairly is a huge deal in my world - not only when I am assessing my students myself, but even more so when the exam boards are assessing them and I am to be judged on the outcome.
I was an absolute idiot about that last night. I met GDB, greeted him and asked him who he was. He told me his real name and explained that he was GDB. I thanked him and moved on to greet Mr FC, without stopping to realise that GDB wouldn't know who I was and I ought to tell him.
I'm sorry to be so grumpy. I shouldn't be.
At work at the moment I can either work on a project that will create well over $500,000 a year extra profit at 0 extra hassle or expense or I can sit there talking to yet another grad with a year's experience and delusions of competency. It's making me far more touchy than I should be.0 -
Short Space travel vid from 45 years ago that might appeal to gen.
MIssk, if you're around, can you tell me how you resolved your memory stick write-protect problem from last year? Got a new stick I've loaded with stuff that now won't let me write on it. Have copied all the stuff I need off of it so going to try to see if my mac will format it (but as it runs X.4 I'm predicting the answer's no.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

Hope your project works out even better than you hope.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I knew some farmers in a not far village starting with a W, they got permission to build on one of their fields on the edge of town and even though this was 25 or more years ago think they made more from that than they ever did from farming...
A farm near W has recently sold land to build the drs surgery on, and a small housing development. The farm shop has a new tea room and they also provide the venue for the W festival.
I posted last night that DD had agreed a new horse share. Text this morning that her friend she hacks out with was hit by a car on our road yesterday evening, her friend is in hospital and the horse had a broken back and was destroyed.:(
Friend is a woman in her 40's almost certainly in high vis to the max. Grrr0 -

Oh god how awful.. I hate hi vis ing up but its too stupid not too. I'm actually thinking of getting a synthetic bridle next time in hi viz for road work to save time and effort:o.
We're also trying to decide what to do for other measures ATM, I'd like people to put dog tags with contact details on bridles ( in case of separation, and on base of hi vis so any attending medic can see). We thought about getting ( bright) saddle cloths printed with address but everybody uses something different and not always compatible.
Not sure this link will work
https://www.facebook.com/BeVisible.SaveYourTail?ref=ts&fref=ts. I want these.
Edit....this link should work...http://tail-lights.com/
Not sure what's happen with the 'polite' hi vis things. By fa the best, and were endorsed by some local police forces then others were trying to ban them last year.....one client has them and the impact on cars when our with her is incredible. I was convinced,

Thanks LydiaJ.
Actually this bit of the project is going very, very well. It was going for almost a year before I got hold of it and almost nothing had happened. It's now getting to the point where the rest will basically run itself to conclusion. With things like this you hit a point of no return and that is 1 week away today.
The interesting bit comes next. If I can get this done then hopefully I can get a series of similar projects through that will put more like $3-10 million on the bottom line, perhaps even more. The theoretical maximum is about $50 million but for various very boring reasons that can never be achieved.0 -

How awful - people can drive very stupidly around horses. My sisters only ride on roads hi-vised up, and even so, there are a surprising number of people who decide to race around narrow, bendy roads at 60mph because the speed limit is that.
Hope friend isn't too badly hurt....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I've not been on a horse - I'd like to go on a beach.... just along the surf's edge.... not daft like that silly girl that lost her pony as she took it in too deep and it started swimming.
They can't turn, so the pony had to keep swimming until it died.

I'd also have made up a vest/string of LED lights to wear... but then I'd not be out on a horse when it's close to dark, for the same reasons I'd not be on a bike in the dark.
Essentially that's what we have, brushing boots for their legs ( no lights but hi viz) and tail guardswhich aren't as good as those lights) and then lots of florescent bands with red flashing lights, and a vest or a jacket each.
Sometimes you have to have horses on the road after optimal light( not necesarily me, though I have in the past) ....leading to and from a field to turn out/ bring in before / after work at least. Sunny days can actually be as be for visibility in shade on dark horses. While we don't hi viz up as much I do insist on some hi viz. its a life saver and its fair to drivers.0
