I spoke to the archivist a while back who helped in terms of telling me where the original school archives are kept and giving me a contact to get hold of them. In terms of the school, I didn't go in the building, but I took the family to College Green and Edgar Tower, as that's where the school was when their family attended. In fact our tour went:

    Start off at Worcester Station
Walked into town past the Butts, explained how in Tudor times, their ancestral menfolk had mandatory archery there once a week.
Walked down the street where the family's house was (not anymore) and saw the church where they were baptised.
Walked up to the Cathedral where their relatives (living in Worcester at the time) sided with the Parliamentarians. Saw the grave of the former Bishop who was friends with the family.
Went to the Commandery, a building the family visited as part of the Clothier's Guild
Visited several other Tudor buildings nearby to see what the houses were like, including Mac n Jac's for lunch.
Went to the Guildhall, unfortunately the Mayoral portraits start more recently.
Went to the archives at the Hive, where we were allowed to make a special visit to the vaults to see the original charter from Queen Elizabeth that the family were a party to.

There is a lot more info on them than average ancestors, though sadly not straightforward. Most of the stuff written about them on the internet is 100% made up guff and cutting through that has been very hard: made up marriage into wealthy families, made up parents, made up children... It's not impossible to get behind (back to the 1580s you can get their BMD records) but there is so much junk out there.

Still they are very interesting: involved in the Dissolution of the Monasteries, tinkering in local politics, hiding their Recusancy, becoming bigwigs in London, being in on the East Indes early days (1640s) as well as Virginia (1620s). They certainly aren't typical. But equally, they aren't my family. I doubt mine will be as interesting and if they are, I probably won't be able to find out:(.

It must still be wonderful to help people with such a fascinating history. It's great that Worcester managed to keep some of the key buildings for their visit!

I just did some googling and didn't know that Edgar Tower was part of a castle there. DD would have loved it as her topic at school has been 'forts and fights' and she was making a motte and bailey castle when we got home from Worcester the other day. I shall tell her where the castle was, if she doesn't already know; she was at the Commandery today herself :)

I would hire a large villa in California and fly all my/OH nearest and dearest over in relays so that we could 'treat' them to a break and we could get time to spend with them and their children.

We would body board from Corona del mar Beach, snorkel off Catalina island, hire Harleys and red soft top Chevy's to travel along the Pacific Coast Hghway, take the littlies to Disney, camp out in the Mojave Desert and visit the mountains. As money is unlimited we would shop in malls and buy great kids clothes.

We would wake listening to the Pacific crash onto the beach, then drink juice, Coffee and eat muffins. there would be romantic dinners at Laguna beach.

We did this for a month when DD was 11 (not the Harley/Chevy) an obviously money was not unlimited, but if it was I would want to share that experience .

We would fly up top, and this time as a bonus no engines would catch fire and we would not have to dump the fuel and return to Heathrow then land with fire engines racing alongside us.

We have just been to Nobu in celebration of OH's birthday.

For someone who doesn't like sushi and doesn't eat shellfish, I found it remarkably enjoyable. Considerably helped by a waitress who ordered everything for us.

    Hope the NP enjoyed themselves.

Just climbing into bed now. Got some fun on the train with some drunk people and happily transport police were on board and settled in down brilliantly before anything much happened at all. Storm in a beer mug, but u settled some younger passengers who were very near the fray, as it would have done me were I that close. :(

Train was same amount late as it always is when fir gets it, which struck me as funny, to be on it not waiting for it. Then shocking fog! And back home took dogs for a widdly wee but big dog wouldn't. The cats are now running like high monkeys round the room.

NDG, dear, dear person! I got your text when I turned my phone back on after five! :(. Thank you.....I actually went to fir's digs where I was too excited to sleep and just wriggled around on the bed a little with my legs up like a kid pretending too nap.

I'm both very tired and a little wired now. I saw little of London at all, but only got one taxi. Had forgotten how tube lines connect:eek: and got on one the wrong way :rotfl: Because forgot to check front of it. Felt very silly.

Michaels, I have some spare cards to post back to you, but I'll need an address.

This morning dog dog was unwilling to get up, but kiwi totally refused. In his crate where he sleeps (his choice) he's difficult to get at too, and so he was safe from any physical cajoling. He just lay their, his fussy little arms over his ears and eyes going 'this is a bad dream, its not morning, she was just here a couple of hours ago'. :).

They're going to get a late breakfast. Its such a grim morning here. :(.

If anyone is wondering how to spend the money and time that Generali is offering, I just stumbled across this whilst looking for christmas lunch ideas.

I think some people are taking my question a bit personally which is slightly odd.

My answer, FWIW, would be to fly to the moon. My colleague wanted to fly round the world to visit all her old mates that she rarely, if ever, got to see.

Personally :D ( not taking it personally, but if you want to look at it that way.....) having watched DH and close friends go through rounds and rounds of interviews with 'imaginative' questions the correct answers of which are the interviewers whim and rarely sincere I just find it a little......aggravating. While I rarely, or rather do not always, agree with PN on the 'jobs for people just like us' I do essentially feel that's what that sort of question finds in its answer, and a lack of sincerity. That's what I dislike about it. A sincere, and well thought out answer that might actually give you the answer you like is less favourable because it doesn't fit a personal idea of fun.

Very, personally, all the answers so far, I think, have involved travel.. All the money in the world cannot do that for me ATM. Not in the time scale! So by default am I boring? :D.

I'm a delayed gratification kinda gal. I'd like the money secure, but the gratification to be in place every week of my life thereafter. Its how much of the rest of my life plays out. Frustrating in some of my favourite situations of course,:whistle::grouphug::naughty: but that's part of the fun of it. :D. For me, like many people, fun is ok, but the anticipation of fun, the fun foreplay if you like, is the real winner. Three weeks of un limited finacial fun would be a bit like an a
L you can eat buffet at any fast food joint, or chain restaurant of your choice rather than an invitation for the closing meal at el bulli, one is.....underwhelming to me though appealing to many, the other is appealing to me though not to others. Both might have validity to different people. Neither might impact on ability to do excel. The choice might impact on ability as a food critic.

The question inverted, why only three weeks of fun if you can secure your foreseeable future garnished, sprinkled with it with just a little self control? Neither is right or wrong I think, nor necessarily a better colleague.

Edit....more straightforwardly.three weeks to do anything.....boring for most people as three weeks with their partner every night is 'normal' but it would certainly be a contender for us. I don't know what we'd do with three weeks, because we'd make the decisions together, but I know we'd spend it together! I just cannot imagine for us a lot of it wouldn't be about securing a future where we spent more time together sooner! Family time is a nice idea, specially for DH.....but would we share our three weeks? We're quite mean about sharing our time......and then I cannot go there and there are all sorts of visa issues ......its so complicated! ( face it gen, we'd buy a house there and in London to ease family situation, make a huge donation to a hospital so maybe I could risk travel cos they'd send someone with me to put me to sleep or deal with the longer term consequences or what ever;) if it all goes tits up. If we had big pots of money forever I'd not own more than one house I think. Ever. I'd stay in hotels I liked and when I found one I loved in places I went I'd become on first name terms with the manager, helped my my big pots of money and the hotel suite would feel enough like home, but better, and safer when I left, no worrying about impact of weather or thefts or whatever, not even lock and leave.....just leave. :).

I'd definitely want a couple of ponies because I could buy the ones I like not the ones I can sort of afford,

Requires rather longer than the 3 weeks gen is prepared to give me off work but he's always seemed an affable sort of chap so I don't suppose he'll mind me taking 4 months off instead. Seems a minor consideration next to the unlimited funds he has agreed to advance to me.
