  • Had no idea you were one of those dirty smokers..... the assumption these days is that people don't smoke; especially posh people :)

An awful lot of barristers smoke, and most of them drink far too much, as well.
You have some very funny ideas about the classes pn :).

She does. I agree with Chewy, it's the respectable building-society-manager classes who don't smoke (-:

I sent my mum the rightmove link and she came back with a very long, critical email which started off with "how bloody much?" And went downhill from thereon in. The garden facing north east seemed to upset her the most and there was a long paragraph about how much trouble conservatories are.

SHows your Mum loves you and wants to make sure you don't splurge your cash unnecessarily, I think.

Tomorrow my team and I spend the morning 'learning' from our individual and collective strengths...and areas/techniques to impove our influencing skills.

That sounds like hell on earth, to me. That would put me back in yesterday's grump (-:

I have friends with kids looking for training contracts and it is a nightmare. There are far more law graduates than training contracts.

This is the very real problem and has been for a while. Plus still quite a few qualified solicitors looking for jobs and taking salary cuts and lateral moves to other ( lower paid) fields to take them in order to stay in practise.

But good new blood will alway be needed. Getting good grades and into 'good' universities is always going to be a real key.

I've heard that drinking/alcoholism is a major problem within the industry in general.... loads of sodden drunk judges wandering about. :)

So many PYO Farms have stopped PYO due to increasing Elf N Safety regs ..... trying to meet the regs would cost more than the business turnover so they've had to stop it.

Hell... getting your eye poked out by a cane or stick was part of the fun of PYO and reaching just a bit too far for some super-succulent looking fruit you espy at the back!

(And I know that was random, but I just wrote something on one of my sites relevant to the subject).

"....the sum of X to DS1, DS2,... this amount to be held individually in trust for each of them until they attain the age of 25 years and I declare that my trustees shall pay such sums immediately following my death and the receipt of the parent or guardian of any grandchild under the age of 18 shall be a full and complete discharge to my trustees in respect of the gifts contained in this sub-clause"

I am puzzled why 18 and 25 are both mentioned, but that is a side issue.

My brother says he can advise a bit if you can scan and email the will - PM me if you want to go down that route. But the wording of the will looks weird to me - if it's supposed to be in trust until they're 25, then why does it direct the trustees to pay the parents immediately? I really really think that you and your sister need proper legal advice before you do anything.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The person I know that did the law thing, wanted to do photography but couldn't get to do that as colleges wanted a year's experience, so did law. Got a 2.1 at a College about 30 years ago, then had to do Solicitors' Finals, which was 42 separate exams on different areas of law; failed some, so had to do another year for a few resits. Then, you did Articles for two years. First Articles was a false start as a job was offered in a law firm and after a few months the Law Society deemed it too small to offer Articles, so was kicked out and landed in the public sector. Did two years' Articles there, submitted Articles, got "admitted to the Supreme Court" at the end of that time.

Total time was: A levels 2 years; degree 3 years; finals 2 years; Articles 2 years.

Speaking recently they told me that people entering these days don't stand a chance as those offering Articles always "know somebody", friend's kid, their kid, neighbour's kid - who get offered the Articles automatically. People just wandering into an advert were up against about 400 applicants.

In the past you didn't actually need a degree to do articles......and now they don't exist.

Its not true that its an old boys net work to get them always at all, DH was interviewed but a lot of people who had been tutored by his father and it really stood against him (revenge!) and some people who hating his bleeding heart left wing parents, Which also stood against him. His worst interview, I think I recounted the'bullsh1tting' episode on here? Its a hilarious story, but horrific for DH at the time, did actually get DH an offer, and he was the only person in the history of the form to turn the offer down :D. So they new of him, but made his interview hell.

His job, he applied to people who didn't know him from Adam, and got it on his own merit...

If you have wealth and are the son of a captain of industry then old boys network is potentially more helpful. Just 'knowing' people really isn't that useful.

I guess so that the executor's job is done? That the will specified that the parents should hold the money until the kids reach 25 rather than the estate/ trustees hold the money til then?

Proper legal advice could be expensive and given the relatively smallish sums involved may not be worth it.

Will hold on your kind offer for the moment, at least until I've had a proper convo with my sister.

Another potential nightmare is that there are 5 executors!

I went to bed at midnight, thinking my body clock would then be reset, only to wake up at 4am!
