I will limit myself to one post tonight.

I am not feeling grumpy although my shoulder is very stiff. I went to a leaving dinner tonight for a colleague who I will miss but had dinner with the kids at home first cos waiting till 8.45 for food when I'm used to eating between 6 and 7 is a stretch too far for me.

Our planning is due to be decided by the 15th, we have had 9 objections from locally well connected people by the look of things and 2 different councillors have called it in to committee (this will happen if the planning officer OK's it) - shame Doozer is not around to advise these days :( The re-mortgage on current house is hopefully progressing and I am busily 'rounding up' funds from all sorts of different sources (legacy of being a matched better).

We may have another Spanish student coming this weekend. We have subscribed to NowTv for 6 months at 2.50/month which is keeping the kids entertained but it would be better if we could get them to read more - anyone got any top tips on how to make reading a pleasure when there are so many immediate gratification activities on tap?

I have no crazing for raw meat and I am pretty ambivalent about chocolate, perhaps I am not a woman after all?

I don't know how you 'make' kids read more. All I can suggest is that you make sure the books they are getting access are the right books for them.

I cannot imagine choosing tv over 'the little white horse' for example ( which was a terrible, terrible film, dreadful, worst adaptation of all time possibly.

I'm guessing you and Dw do read with them a short while each evening? If they associate it with love, security, happy times..maybe that sticks later in life?

Michael's, do you know the summer reading challenge is on at the moment? 6 books across the hols and a range of bits and Bob's to acquire end route. They can even borrow library books on readers. For the first time, the challenge also has a proper interactive bit online, with codes to unlock content as you are progressing.

Am on my tablet so apologies for any strange spelling or grammar.

WE are doing library books on nooks and the reading challenge but they just lie and claim they have read the books when they haven't to meet the challenge stages :(
    I think....

Had no idea you were one of those dirty smokers..... the assumption these days is that people don't smoke; especially posh people :)
You have some very funny ideas about the classes pn :).

Actually, PN is spot on. There's a terrific gradient in smoking by socio-economic group. It accounts for very roughly half the difference in life expectancy between different socio-economic groups.

There are loads of references online, but this is one:
    http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-info/cancerstats/types/lung/smoking/lung-cancer-and-smoking-statistics#socio

    And this: http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/documents/smoking_and_health_inequalities.pdf
    "Smoking is the principal cause
of the inequalities in death rates
between rich and poor. Put simply,
smoking is a public health disaster."
Alan Milburn, Secretary of State for Health
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Apparently, you are supposed to mention two positive points, then introduce your negative feedback with the words "Could be even better if .... " :)

    Le smoking. ;)

I think a lot of smoking is education and hope rather than class perhaps?

Its not uncommon to be v. Posh and a smoker. I'd agree with chewy its the hand wringers in the middle who are the most different from working and v, posh who have some similarities. Most of us are seeming in the middle now really any way ( socio wise, if not econo wise)

I once read that being in Oxford is like smoking forty, or maybe sixty a day. That has to be wrong, surely?
