That's the usual way (BSc then MSc) - I did a 4 year undergrad (MSci) worked for a year then did an MSc in a different (only slight overlap) science.
Then started a PhD in a different science again (I can see why people stick to the same subject).

Well, the email I BCC'd myself on has just arrived in my inbox.
I have the dregs of a box of wine drained into a glass.
And a whole 5 minutes to spare.
Congratulations! You've done it all - namely, proved to yourself you've done it. The rest is icing.
One of OH's closest mates had his viva on Friday, and passed, so is now a Dr. He deals with changes in the sea floor; a lot of his work is in the Antarctic or nearby. (When we went ski-ing, his jacket had "British Antarctic Survey" on it, which is pretty much the ace of trumps in cold weather gear terms!)
He's takne 8 years to do it, Nikki, so you're just an infant!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I have a MSci (Hons) and an MSc, both of which I had to earn. I really don't understand the bonus MA thing.
I have an LLB and an LLM (undergrad and master's degree in law) both of which I had to do a fair amount of work for.
I'm also Miss NDG of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, for which I had to pass my bar exams (a year-long course) and eat my dinners in hall....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I think the Bar dinners are the most important part of the qualification process, aren't they?0

Got a BA, starting my MSc on the 16th
Could be a great opportunity, could be a huge waste of money. Kind of excited to find out.
Congratulations - I hope you enjoy the course.
My mother has MA (Cantab) whcih means undergrad degree and she paid £10 later on for the MA bit.
She also has an earned master's degree in music, which she did a few years ago, at Birkbeck College in London. If it's an Oxbridge MA it's an upgraded BA. From anywhere else it's been earned, AFAIK.
Absolutely. An earned masters from Oxford is definitely MPhil, but I'm not sure about Cambridge.
An earned masters in law from Oxford is a BCL - Bachelor of Civil Laws. Just to help the confusion, here.......The debate about why kids from state schools are under-represented at these universities comes up a lot, and even though I went to a decent state school a lot of the teachers had that attitude. So it really doesn't surprise me that kids from these schools aren't encouraged to apply, and aren't told that they have a realistic chance of going, or that it's worth their while.
My Dad went to a good grammar school near Liverpool. He wanted to apply to Oxford - but his grammar school didn't do Latin at all, and at the time, you needed Latin O level to study anything at Oxford or Cambridge. So the school excluded itself from Oxbridge entrance, which wasn't helpful.
My Dad being the stubborn type, did third year 6th Oxford entry and did Latin O level in a term....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Knew somebody who was a part-time waitress at the College.
I don't remember my mother mentioning many nights running around graveyards...
She did tell me that the students at Girton had a curfew every night, and then the gates were locked and people not in where in a certain amount of trouble. She also told me (when i was safely grown up, so as not to be a Bad Influence) that she's climbed over the walls a few times.PasturesNew wrote: »That's why I did an A level
I was 35 when I did that.
A level in what?I think the Bar dinners are the most important part of the qualification process, aren't they?
they are essential - you can't be Called to the Bar until you've completed them. And you can't do them in a last-minute rush, either - there is a max number that count per term, 4, I think, but I could be wrong....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Nobody went to Oxbridge unless they'd been a to a school that did A levels as well as or instead of Highers, which was pretty rare.
We all assumed that as 17-year-olds the English unis wouldn't look at us and so we had the choice of another year in school and one less at uni, or one less at school but one more at uni. Not much of a contest.

Coming from a state school (albeit grant maintained and a boarding school) I was treated like some kind of leper by the other interviewees, the students acting as hosts and by the interviewers themselves. One interviewer actually laughed at me in the interview when I got something wrong, which was less than pleasant. I have never wanted to leave somewhere so quickly, and I was stuck there for 2 days. On the second day I had an interview for a different college whose name I can't remember which was much better but they rejected me as well.
I am so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad the other college was more civilised.
My experience of Oxford was that nobody cared what kind of school you'd been to, although some of the state school students expected that people would. Also, some of the state school students didn't feel able to admit to their home friends where they were at university. There was one bloke from somewhere in London who just told his mates he was going "to college" and when they asked which college, he said "Merton College" and allowed them to assume it was some kind of FE place in Merton in south London for two years before he let on that he was actually at university in Oxford. (The founder of Merton College, Oxford came from Merton, which was a small place some distance from London back then. He endowed the college with some land around there, which became much more valuable 650 years or so later when London expanded.)neverdespairgirl wrote: »An earned masters in law from Oxford is a BCL - Bachelor of Civil Laws. I think there's a BLitt as well, and maybe others.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

It does not matter if it is a week or a minute to spare. You hit the deadline.
Well done Nikks, it is out of your hands now after a huge effort over the last while and had other life events to plan too.So you might as well relax and get on with doing things you enjoy.0 -
