Hi all, I'm new here just wanted a bit of advice at the end of June I received a letter from the water board stating I had a water leak and my bill was 371.77 I rang then and they advised a person from there team too come and check my meter I read the meter a few times and it didn't seem to move I got my boiler checked for leaks and checked under the house and toilet and couldn't find a leak. The person from the water board came out and he too couldn't find any leaks so I rang them back they are saying the leak was from last September - march this year. My question is shouldn't they have told me sooner and do I have too pay the money?
Any advice would be much appreciated thank you

    Welcome to the forum.

Are you sure the water company said you had a water leak? or suggested that might be the reason for a high bill?

If the leak was in the period September to March, where was the leak and who fixed it?

If your meter is on the pavement, the leak could have been in the pipe to the house. However those leaks don't cure themselves.

Or, it could have been an internal leak, often a cistern overflowing into the bowl.

In either case you are responsible for fixing the leak and paying for the 'lost' water. However most companies will make a one-off 'good-will' repair for an external leak and make an allowance for the lost water.

How could the water company have notified you earlier? They can only note excessive consumption when they read the meter; you have the ability to check more frequently(albeit few of us do so)

Hi, thanks for your reply I check my meter often I had just bought the house and moved in every bill had a meter read then I got a letter through suggesting a leak as the consumption was high as it was just me in the house. I have spoke again with the water company who have said they can not find a leak from the meter to the house or inside the house they are assuming it was outside the property and have rectified my bill accordingly.
