Just a quick note to say that it is up to the vet practice to allow direct claims, not the insurance company. Is always worth asking the practice though.0

Yes, it is up to a vet practice to agree to direct payment from insurance company and they normally do it with known/respected insurance provided.
Who is your dog insured with? What company?
HOpe all turns out ok... Fingers crossed0 -
Most of my vets are happy to take instalments, worth asking.0

This happened to me last year - they would only accept direct claims through Petplan who I wasn't insured with. I let them treat my dog, and then told them I couldn't pay upfront. They allowed a direct claim0

Oh no your poor dog
my puppy is insured with kennel club and they pay direct within 5 days I asked the vets about this when I first took him and they said its no problem they dont expect people to be able to just pay upfront. Have you explained to the vets ? I know its upto each individual vets practice but surely they know people cant afford to just pay up front thats why we have insurance.
Can you ask to speak to the practice manager who are you insured with ?
Hope your dog is ok andnon the mend soon

I have just done the insurance for our Teddy and although it is more expensive I have gone with PetPlan mainly because they will settle vets bills direct. We don't have a credit card and although I'm starting to put a bit aside now when I can, we wouldn't have the option of paying up-front either.
Unless the vetinary practice has agreed beforehand, this is pointless if the vet wants paid at the time of surgery.
I would be peeved if I discovered my vet was doing this only for selected customers and not others.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Sorry but they run a business like any other and it is not a case of doing something for selected customers and not others but doing it with selected insurance companies and not others.
Some insurance companies pay promptly and some simply refuse to pay out.
My vets take direct claims for fees over £300.00 from both Argos (got a dog and 1 cat with Argos) and PetPlan (got 5 cats with PetPlan) - never had any problems.

We don't have a credit card and it would literally kill me if Ted couldn't have treatment just because we couldn't afford it. I am starting to save now, just in case, but the more expensive PetPlan seemed a better option in our circumstances than a cheaper plan.
Why don't you get a credit card then, just for emergencies?
Have you looked at M&S insurance?0 -
I think providing you are open and honest most vets are flexible with payments. Mine get arsey if you don't communicate with them (I've heard them on the phone to owners who go quiet!) which is understandable but as long as you are in touch and keep them informed they're happy.
Mine take direct payment from Argos no problem. They have no hard and fast rule of who they will and won't take payments from. It's more they expect people to put a chunk down if its a new claim. I have a credit card and for new claims like grass seed in an ear which cost £180, that went on there and I claim it back. For ongoing meds it's £600 every six months and I just give them a claim form and they claim direct.0 -
