Giving medical advice to an individual is extremely irresponsible. Their GP is the right person to advise them regarding the possibilities of taking (or not taking) a specific medication.

Please, do not give advice like the above, to someone for whom appropriate medication, properly prescribed, might be a life saver.

Sorry I had no idea I was giving medical advice. I certainly didn't mean to.

My apologies OP. I'm sure your GP will look after you after your visit this morning. All the best.

  • It wasn't you Dimey. Another poster had written that op should not take any medication - this has now been removed. I, personally think that all of your advice and suggestions so far have been good and well thought out.

OP, I do hope that you sort things out, and have gotten into the doctors today because you are an emergency. But please remember, you have to want to help yourself. I have no experience with gambling addiction, but lots of experience with depression - there is help available, whether medicine, talking, exercise etc - but you have to help yourself by asking for help and accepting it. The first steps are the hardest but you can improve things. I wish you luck.

    And thanks Wannabee.

    Hi,

I have to be honest and admit that I only skimmed some of what some people have posted but a lot of your comments sound familiar... I was in a similar position but am now getting help and feel like I'm getting back on track.

    Seems like there is a lot of excellent advice already offered but;

    1. Self exclusion! It is a bit embarrassing but so what, the people in the bookies aren't real friends anyway.

    2. Contact Gamcare, I did and was put in touch with a group called NECA who help people with addiction problems. I originally went to my GP who told me that I could be added to a waiting list to see a counsellor but it would be 6+ months whereas NECA got me someone within a couple of weeks.

    3. Contact StepChange, they are a debt charity and if nothing else are happy to discuss any money issues and concerns with you - even if you don't come away with a definite solution then it's good talk.

    4. It sounds like you believe you are of no value and define yourself by your debts. Try to take back your own life, little by little even if that means planning your meals to take your mind off having little - what can you do for yourself which best makes use of the little you have?

    5. Worked for me so worth suggesting, Soduko - seeing numbers in front of me and trying to put them into a 'winning order' rather surprisingly helped me as a big part of my addiction was the numbers be it roulette, or the number of the horse, etc.

    6. This is going to sound really stupid but again, it worked for me... When was the last time you bought yourself something which was not a basic human requirement? I suspect that your own lack of self worth means that you feel you deserve nothing so buy something to break the chain of spare cash = gambling money. My first purchase was a t-shirt and a 3 pack of socks which came to about £10 but getting something for myself made them feel worth £100!

Hope something here is of help.

    Be strong, good luck.

    Hi Bounce08
Just a note to say I hope you had a successful visit to the GP and do keep to whatever was agreed.

If you were fobbed off then keep trying and take up the tips from Monkeyballs.
    Good luck.

I hae read this thread with great interest and I sincerely hope that you have had a meeting with your GP that touches the spot. If not, try another one. My GPs have a big old list of GPs and some I have not connected with and now I have a lovely gentle GP who doesnt tell me what to do but just simply says 'I am here to help you get better'.

Bounce - I shall follow your progress on your journey. It is a journey and you can only get better from now on.....

    wheezy.
